What are some good books for a beginner to get into circuit building? I know about the Engineer's Mini-Notebook series, but due to mixed reviews i'm curious to alternatives.

You are already familiar with the Engineer mini-notebooks. Check out all the other book by the same author Forest Mims. They are generally very readable and informative.
Try the "Circuit Cookbooks" for the specific area you are interested in. See Links below.
Also, if you can find it, Radio Shack put out two books that are out of pring now:
The Electronic Engineer's notebook
and the 555 timer cookbook.
