Info on Concrete Dowels?

Do I need dowel sleeves on either side of the joint between concrete road sections?

Answer:
The classic dowel detail includes a 3/4" diameter smooth bar which is placed in a plastic sleeve within the first concrete placement with enough extension for the second concrete placement. The sleeve allows the concrete panels to move laterally but not up and down.

These dowels only act as shear resistance between adjacent concrete panels.
It depends on what type of joint you are talking about.

If it is a transverse contraction joint, you should use smooth dowels with no sleeves.

If it is a transverse expansion joint, you should use smooth dowels with sleeves.

If it is a longitudinal construction joint, you should use deformed bars with no sleeves.
