Question for Civil Engineers (Concrete) PLEASE HELP!?
A load of 12 tonnes is applied onto a reinforced square concrete pad foundation.
If the bearing capacity of the soil is 120KN/M2 and a factor of safety of 3 is to be applied,
PAD Foundation area is therefore 2.942SQ.M
But, if the same load was applied over 1 METRE run of a wall to be supported on a STRIP foundation
what minimum width of STRIP foundation would then be required???
Answer:
you need the same area on a section of strip 1 m long
therefore width =2.942/1=2.942
also foundations can't be built accurate to the nearest millimetre, concrete dimension are usually rounded up to the nearest 50 mm or in something this size even more so you would use a 3.0 m wide strip
