What would 1/2-16 UNC stand for?

and how do i understand and read it? what does each number mean and what does each letter mean?

Answer:
1/2-16 UNC stands for a 1/2 inch diameter screw with 16 threads per inch. UNC stands for "Unified Coarse" comes from the Unified Screw threads standards. other posibilities are UNF (fine) UNEF (extra fine) UNS (special). Also not that a 1/2-16 UNF is not a typical screw: At 1/2" usually comes in 13 threads per inch, for 16 threads per inch you would need to reduce the size to 3/8".
Sounds like a type of screw that is 1/2 inch long with 16 threads per inch. Not sure what UNC means, maybe the manufacturer.
previous bloke 3/4 correct, 1/2 inch shank diameter-16 threads per inch- UNC universal national coarse and UNF is uni. nat. Fine
yes it's a kind of thread. UNC stands for Unified National Coarse. I think i'ts 1/2-13 and not 1/2-16. 1/2 is the diameter and 13 is the TPI(Threads Per Inch). Or 3/8-16 and not 1/2-16
*1/2 UNC is 1/2 inch diameter,which is a identity of thread and 16 is the TPI (Thread Per Inch).
*UNC (Unified Coarse Thread).
*As per UNC Thread ANSI B1.1, 1/2 inch UNC IS having 13 TPI.
Your case is a special case.

*UNC (Unified Coarse Thread) Profile:
Thread Angle 60 degrees
r = Basic Radius = 0.1443 p
hn = Basic Height of Internal Thread and Depth of Thread Engagement = 0.54127 p
hs =Basic Height of External Thread = 0.61344 p
p = Pitch = 1/t.p.i.
The 1/2 is the bolt diameter, the 16 is the thread count per inch, the UNC stands for unified national coarse thread. UNF would be for unified national fine threads.

1/2-13 UNC
1/2-20 UNF
