How do you convert Sq/ft. lbs to Newtons?

My grandfather from the fatherland, Germany, give me a torque wrench for my birthday. Well, its in NEWTONS.

Answer:
*Torque wrenches are given the units of N-m or ft-lb.
*1 pound foot = 1.355 817 952 newton meter
*1 newton meter = 0.737 562 147 pound foot.

*[torque (or often called a moment) can informally be thought of as "rotational force" or "angular force" which causes a change in rotational motion. This force is defined by linear force multiplied by a radius.
The SI unit for torque is the newton metre (N m). In U.S. customary units, it is measured in pounds-feet (lb-ft) (a.k.a. "foot-pounds"). The symbol for torque is τ, the Greek letter tau.]
[*A torque wrench is a tool used to precisely set the force of a fastening such as a nut or bolt. It is usually in the form of a socket wrench with special internal mechanisms. A torque wrench is used where the tightness of screws and bolts is crucial. It allows the operator to measure the torque applied to the bolt so it can be matched to the specifications. This permits proper tension and loading of all parts. A torque wrench indirectly measures bolt tension. The technique suffers from inaccuracy due to inconsistent friction between the fastener and its mating hole. Measuring bolt tension (bolt stretch) is more accurate but most often torque is the only means of measurement possible.]
Sq/ft. lb is not a compatible unit with a Newton... and Newtons are a measurement of force, not torque. More likely, the units are N-m (newton meters)

Since you just need to know how to use the tool I won't bore you with the steps of the unit conversion, just multiply the reading on the wrench (in N-m) by .738 to get ft-lbs
To convert Newtons to pounds you multiply by 0.2248. Newtons and pounds are both force measurements. To get from pounds to torque in inch-lbs you need to measure the distance from the center of the socket driving stub to the mid point of the grip at the end of the torque wrench. There should be a mark on the wrench at that point. Multiply that measurement by the pounds you obtained from converting from Newtons to obtain in-lbs. To get to ft-lbs just divide in-lbs by 12. There is no such thing as Sq/ft.lbs. Are you certain that the units are in Newtons and not Newton meters or centimeters?
