Can someone describe what soil suction entails, and what the practical (rather than theoretical) applications are? It seems people are making the subject more complicated that what it is.

I think what you need is that the soil suck water from near sources, this soil called "Swallow Soil", it has the capacity to swallow water then it become like a dome. The practical way to solve this problem is in two ways:
1. To treate the soil chimically.
2. To make a "Soil Replacement" and replace the soil with good materials so no more headace.
