Can I find a really cheap and small chip that can be located in a some metre distance?

I would like to know if I can buy tiny chips that will be located by some device in a some mettre distance. Like those they use on supermarkets.

Answer:
They're called RFID tags.

The tags themselves are passive and can be produced fairly economically. The detector, however, is going to cost you a bit more.
