What is the function of a capacitor in an A.C.?

Answer:
is starter the motor
Counteracts the inductive reactance of a coil. Stores charge.
Smoothing of the voltage. It is a bit like a damper /shock absorber in a car.
Simple explination. stores energy
unlike a battery it has a quick discharge.
capacitive reactance will cause the current to lead the voltage
I don't quite agree with above answers:
1) A capacitor does NOT keep a charge under AC conditions, only with DC
2) It does not "smoothen" the AC, only DC
The most common use of a capacitor (under AC conditions) are
A) Let AC through, but block DC from getting through
B) For shifting the phase, in order to
b.1) Start an AC motor
b.2) Counter-act phase shift from an inductive load
C) In combination with a yoke (inductance), you can achieve a bandpass filter (lets only a certain frequency range pass)
D) More seldom: A capacitor can be used as a resistance to AC
Inductance of a motor or similar device causes a sort of wasted energy. A capacitor or bank of capacitors can store enough energy to overcome the force of the constantly rising and collapsing magnetic field. This will allow more actual input power to be used to turn the motor while the capacitor generates the field.
Improve poor power factor of a circuit by reduce inductor current lagging the voltage. It is also use for starting single phase motor when higher starting torque are required and initial inrush current will be reduced.
