Long story short, in the game Runescape, I was intrigued by the concept of the fictional metal Rune. I did some math, and figured out that rune is 256% stronger than steel in the game. Of course a certain kind of steel is needed for armor that can take a decent beating, so, what kind of steel is best? And finally, What metal is 256% stronger than steel? or closest to it.
Answer:
Stronger on an equal area basis, or equal weight? Titanium and some of the more exotic aluminum allows will beat plain low carbon steel by that ratio on a equal weight basis. On an equal area basis, I'd have to do some research, but some heat treated alloy steels are easily that much stronger than plain low carbon steel.
