What Kind of Mechanical Pencil(s) are the best to get?
Answer:
It is quite subjective, I tend to like Pentel, but not the very cheapest ones, however 3 to 5 dollars will get a decent pencil, you can spend more, but i lose them too often. I recommend one that has metal tip, and lead support sleeve, some of the very cheapest have a completely plastic tip, they are junk, some have a metal sleeve in a plastic tip, they can be ok, in fact i had one I really liked, but eventually the plastic cracked and the sleeve became lose, so I recommend an all metal tip.
It's not like getting married, you can try one that looks good and if it turns out it doesn't suit you, just get another. Ok, maybe it is like getting married these days, but still, you are only out a few dollars, and don't have to file for divorce.
Agree, the Pentel is a good one. Try the Side FX 0.7. It's a side advance model. I don't like the top advance ones since using the eraser usually advances the lead, no big deal, but avoidable. Paper Mate makes a nice side advance one too. Get one that has a fairly large eraser, or refills. Also, unless you have a specific reason for a very fine line, stick to 0.7mm instead of 0.5, you'll break fewer leads.
My pencil of choice has been the 0.3mm Alvin Draftmatic with an H lead for the past 15 years.
While in College I experimented with a number of different ones and once I found the one I liked that was all I use.
As was already said this is a very personal choice. Most engineers covet their personal pencils as much as their calculators.
Add into that what lead hardness you preffer and it could take a lot of research to find what you like.
