What is the exact definition of Engineering?
Answer:
To me, engineering is applied science. A scientist may do research without any concern whether such is useful to the humanity. A technician may learn to use a machine, and learn well without a deep understanding of how the machine works, or even the general context where it is used.
An engineer has a solid background in the sciences, better than most people. Such is necessary, given the problems he is asked to solve. He may learn the discoveries of the scientist, and use the knowledge to solve problems in the real world. Such applications may not be obvious, and it takes a lot of dedication to do the job well.
Also, to a degree any solution involves normal people and machinery. Think ordinary people and cellular phones. Most people know how to use a phone, and the profit from this usage its obvious. They are not aware of the complex networks and systems necessary to keep the phone working as expected. They do not need to know, because the network is designed so most users are not aware of its presence. It is engineers who keep the system invisible to the users.
There are many situations where machinery and people interact. In general, there will be many people who will learn to use the machine without knowing the internal works. Those are the users, and ideally they should know nothing about the machinery so they can concentrate their efforts in the usage or production. There will be other people, far fewer in number, who ensure the machinery is running properly. Of those, many are engineers, but not all of them have to be. To the ignorant, these people are invisible. Even the users are aware the machinery is complicated, but they do not know, and do not need to know, in any detail. Engineers keep running the machinery, and the complexity is kept hidden from others, so these others can concentrate their efforts in other areas. Such is the mission of engineering.
The branch of knowledge that deals with application of science and technology in varoius fields e,g. infrastructure, communication, agriculture, industry etc.
It is true that Engineering is related to applied science, which means that an Engineer uses science to construct appliances for human beings, using scientific principles. Science has no meaning without an Engineer to put it in day to day use.
