Well there is the good old compass which by the magic of magnetism points to the north.
Except when hiking over hills/mountains containing large quantise of iron, unfortunately I did not realise this until near the end of the day when I was some miles to the east of my destination. Ever since I have used a compass and used the sun/moon as a safety check (assuming you can see them).

Yes of course magnets used in compass shows north ,but not true north,this can be find using a graphical table,which resembles 8 ,this is the the one xact to find true north.
