I think Institution of engineer(India) is better choice for you. It is popularly known as AMIE. BE equivalent courses run by this Institution are approved by central govt. of India. You can also opt for this course from Indian Institute Of Metal(IIM).
engineering course could not be done through correspondence. AMIE is not that valued. It is said its equivalent to BE but Not a single employer goes for a AMIE person these days. You can do part time BE which can be sponsored by the employer you are working with. Its good value, but no equal to a regular engineering degree.
For any engineering degree you require lab/practical class which can be available only for regular BE students. You can see in AICTE (All India council for Technical Education) web site for Govt of India approved colleges offering BE metallurgy
