Water cost question?

"Desalting sea water is expensive,Macro running .... mostly because of the energy required. Current cost estimates run at about $650 per acre foot (326,000 gallons), as opposed to $200 for purifying the same amount of fresh water."

"An acre-foot is about 326,000 gallons, or about enough to supply two homes for one year."

these are 2 quotes from a new article in Yahoo! But more interesting, it claims campanies can produce water for 2 homes for on year for only $200. Thats only $100 a home. If thats true, why do we pay so much for water!??

Answer:
Its tough to say what the cost of water is from one location to the next, but for desal cost is more like $2000-$3,000 per acre foot, based on 10MGD plant West Coast ...costs you read about for desalting water are often from Middle East or countries with minimal environmental laws and regs as well as cheap labor and even cheaper electricity...there is as previous answerers indicate a lot more than just desalting water that goes into it but water costs are going to increase in the next few years becasue America's infrastructure is old and the cost of replacing it is high. So try thinking a bit more critically when you read these stories about $600/AF water ...
Because you are not paying for just the water that goes to your house. There is an entire infrastructure that you pay for with your water bill. The water, employees, research, etc...
Ok, but those county workers have pensions, health benefits, and retirement accounts to pay for. The cost of the product is now a fraction of the price required to cover the workers. Every time health insurance jumps, GM has to increase the price of their cars so much to compensate.
We pay for the infrastructure to get it into your sink. They are comparing the cost of purifying water, not the end cost to the consumer.
