What can I do?
Answer:
Freecycle is an environmental group across the country designed to reduce the number of usable items tossed into dumps. Most everyone throws away things that are still usable just because they no longer want them. Freecycle offers a place (online) where they can offer those unwanted items to other people who may well have a use for them. I love it! It makes closet or garage cleaning a breeze as you don't have to lug the stuff away, people come and get it. You can find Freecycle at http://www.freecycle.org/ and then select the group or groups in your area.
Other groups you can make are ones that do something. Remember that a group that just gets together from time to time to grumble about the environment is a pretty useless group. Some successful groups I've seen here are groups that clean up roads or even help clean the lakes and rivers. We once got over 350 people together to clean the shores of a local lake. Some even came with boats and large nets and helped to clear any floating garbage. We spent 2 hours cleaning and about 6 partying afterwards at one HUGE pot-luck barbecue! It was a LOT of fun!
I would if i lived there but you should! :)
Sure
Of course people would join. and people already have!
Join your local Freecycle group. There is already a group with 2,000 + members in Joplin.
Go here to check it out:

Another chapter you could start for Missouri is a Compact group. I was shocked to see Missouri didn't already have one.

Yahoo Groups is a great place to start a local environment group.
Good luck, and welcome on the journey of greener living.

yes. look at the gas protest today. Word of mouth really can make a difference talk to your friends and make a difference
of course people would join, hopefully you will start a bandwagon.
Yes! I would start with first going to groups perhaps in your area, start a Yahoo! Group and myspace group, even facebook to try to get interest! Create awareness! Good luck!
I would. You look HOT!
I doubt many people in any city of Missery (Joplin, Balwin, St. Louis, ect) would join your group, especially if they've already joined another such group. Tabbs, you'd be better off moving to California, and starting it. You might get upto 5k people in California to join.
Oh, I'm sure that if you got the word around town in every way possible, you'd get a few people together, who'd bring in a few more people. Basically, the trick is to get the word out to anyone, and then form a plan of action to help your city save.

take out a want ad in your local paper and state the same thing with contact information. Be prepard for followers who would not like to lead. Good luck
If you are serious about this, there are many ways to look for members. Send notices to the schools, PTAs, churches (on recycled paper and tell everyone to carpool). See if one of the schools or churches would let you use their building as a meeting place. Try to make in civic, as well as envio, consicious. Things like alum can drives to help the local nursing home purchase needed things, organizing plant swaps, doing monthly litter pick up. Most schools have not only a PTA type thing, but a Student Council or Outreach Program that requires the students to log volunteer hours. Offer to works w/ these groups to not only help the kids make their needed hours, but to teach the next generation at the same time.
