What did you do this week to reduce your carbon footprint?
Answer:
:) Love this question because Im very proud of myself this week!
Time to gloat!
We just finished putting up a clothes line today!I started washing all my clothing in cold water and got an added bonus-it got stains out better!I used our food scraps for our garden insted of useing fertalizer!I walked to the local store insted of driving, and brought a tote bag with me insted of useing on of their plastic bags!I plan on finding uses for things that I would normally throw away and makeing the effort to buy things that can be recycled!WHOO HOO I FEEL GOOD!
Forgot to send in my gas payment, and it got shut off! Ah well, it will be up in a couple days.gotta have hot water for my shower and washing!
Seriously, I have been walking more to the post office and park, and keeping all my lights off during the day and using natural sunlight.
Rode public transit, hung dry laundry, and as usual, recycled. Also, I'm trying to start washing laundry with cold water.
well I recycle everyweek so YAY ME
Nothing, it is already too small.
Washed all my laundry in cold water, used all CFL bulbs, ate salads instead of firing up stove.
I don't drive a car, I always use public transportation that uses bio-diesel or diesel/electrical engines. I try and be good to Mother Earth, it's the only one we have
- I have been driving with the AC off (even though it's getting so warm here) and windows wide open with the wind on my face.
- I've been driving less agressively to reduce the amount of gas I spend.
- I take my own bags to grocery stores and I was even brave enough to take my own cloth bags to GAP and DSW this week.
- I purchased "silk" milk, and did the greencap http://www.silksoymilk.com/greencap/... thing
- I recycled all my bottles, aluminum, plastic, paper.
- I've been eating vegetarian because the raising of cattle takes a lot of green space and increases waste production.
- I've been clicking once a day to stop global warming http://stopglobalwarming.care2.com/...
- I have unplugged all the devices that aren't needed and eat up too much energy.
- I've been clicking once a day to save rainforests http://rainforest.care2.com/
- I've been listening to podcasts by "the lazy environmentalist", "treehugger", etc. To be informed in new trends, ideas and products to support the green economy and green living.
So much more... my life has written GREEN all over it right now!
We just bought a Toyota Prius, wash our laundry in cold water then hang it outside and eat only organic foods. Started to recycle more and bring my own canvas bags to the grocery store.
Carpool to work Recycle. Air dry laundry. Limit driving on weekends. Power down all equipment at home/work when not present. Grow organic vegetable garden, trees, ground cover. Receive, return and maintain personal and work related mail ,reports and records in a paperless environment Encourage education and participation in environmental issues.
-like many others, i've been washing almost all my laundry in cold water. i've been doing this for years, actually. the one exception is my son's cloth diapers, but i feel that the fact that i'm using cloth over disposables makes up for the hot water wash once every 3 days. :) additionally, i use only vinegar and baking soda for my laundry needs.
-i use all natural cleaning products throughout my house and have for a while.
-i compost as much as possible.
-i recycle as much as possible.
-i drive less than 20 miles per day, and I drive a ULEV so that helps somewhat. i live in an area without easy access to public transit, and i have two children who can't ride on a city bus anyway, so the car is unavoidable.
-i've been opening the windows to let in the breeze rather than turning on the A/C (in both the house and the car)
-i compulsively turn off every light and unused electric-sucking item constantly, and recently started posting notes around my office reminding my coworkers to do the same.
-i line dried half of my laundry
-i switched out 3 regular bulbs for CFLs as the old bulbs had finally died. i'm trying to replace them only as they die so as to not be so wasteful with money, either.
-i did not buy fancy wrapping paper or ribbons for mother's day gifts, but used interesting paper we had around the house instead.
i held my breath longer and breathed slowly so there would be more air.
drove less, carpooled, waited untill I had many errands to run before left the house, used the phone and internet to shop (instead of the car), .(since the temp is reaching the high 90's, I opened the windows and used the ceiling fan at night, closed the windows and blinds during the day, turned on the AC only during the hottest part of the day, set the thermostat at 80 instead of 76, rolled down the windows in the car except for the very hottest part of the day, left my windows open in the car, while parked, so it didn't take as much AC to cool it off, changed the oil, rotated and aired the tires, turned off the lights, changed 2 lightbulbs to flourescent, shopped second hand, put a recyling bin in my bathroom, donated to a thrift shop, walked instead of drive to places close to home, cooked a big meal to increase leftovers and to decrease the oven usage, used a crockpot instead of the oven, took shorter showers, took cooler showers, watered at night instead of the daytime, cut back on the watering schedule, talked to my kids about reducing, refused a bag when I could use my own, set my washer to default to cold water, linedried clothes instead of the dryer, replaced night light bulbs to lower ones, used the chalkboard for messages instead of paper, made my own popsicles which saved on packaging, drink tap water instead of bottled, bought items in bulk which also saves on packaging, used the internet for research instead of going to the library,
i planted a tree! named it rosa ...cuz it was a ponderosa pine. :0)
According to the site's calculator, my total footprint is 8613, but 5,950 of that is from estimated numbers using UK averages, so I am not certain that it's anywhere near my actual usage. While I am not about to donate money to reduce that number by giving cash to reduce the problem in foreign nations, I do my part HERE. We recycle as much as possible. I am a member of Freecycle, my recycling bin is full a LOT more often than my trash bin is, I live in an apartment, so I can't have an outdoor garden, but my walk-in closet has become a lovely little arboretum complete with waterfall fish pond! (This gives us year-round fresh, pesticide-free, vegetables) My husband carpools to work. We carpool with 3 other students to school during the school year. I work from home which eliminates the need for me to carpool. We belong to a "grocery group" in which a large group of us all go shopping together, in one vehicle. We all bring our own grocery bags, so knowing which bag belongs to which member is easy at the end of the trip. (Mine are tye-dyed canvas in green and blue.)
I took my bike to work and not my car,I also swicthed to the right kind of light bulbs in my house, and oh yeah I have now stopped using my dishwasher
Turned off the lights when I left a room. Shopped at a thrift store. Recycled. Carpooled. Walked. Shopped at local farmers market.
We have a passive solar home (passive heating and cooling), we have a solar hot water heater, and a solar PV electric system. We supply all of our electricity from the sun and our inverter can tell us at any given time, the total carbon output we have offset so far since the system has been installed. (I haven't read the readout in a while so I can't give you a number right now - but it's several thousand pounds of carbon that we have NOT produced at this point).
We use all CF light bulbs, energy star appliances, naitive landscaping and no-mow lawn, telecommute from home, solar heat, hot water, and electricity, daylighting in our home (no lights during the day), no AC, buy locally sourced products to reduce shipping/transportation pollution, and more.
