Should there be a minimum passenger requirement for certain vehicles to be on the road?

For example, on a daily basis I see huge SUVs, huge trucks and what not, being driven by ONE person. Forget the fact the person usually can't drive or park the enormous vehicle, but they have no passengers in their gas guzzling car! I feel there should be a law or something that enforces either carpooling, or helps persuade people to buy more fuel efficient cars. I'm not saying those large vehicles shouldn't be bought period. I'm just saying that if someone has one for whatever reason, they at least use it for THAT reason and that reason only. Say, a large truck for a farm. Well, you don't need to drive that truck to get some McDonalds. Ok? A huge suburban. Ok mom, you don't have to drive that huge car to get your nails done. I get that some people can't afford more than one car, but if you can afford to pay the gas for one of those monsters, i think you could afford to pay for a small gas conserving car to use as your point A and B car. What do you guys think?

Answer:
I don't agree with a law to force people to carpool...I think it would be better to entice folks with a tax break, or something like that.

It would be nice if my state would lower my vehicle tax because I never drive alone (too many kids!) Maybe if they did, there would be less cars on the road and the state wouldn't have to be fixing the roads all the time.
Thank GOD u are not in control and it is up to the individual and we are still a free people.
I'm sorry, but when I get my H3 next year, I don't want people like you telling me how many people I can have in my vehicle in order to be out on the road, or what I can and can't use my vehicle for. I DO NOT want to be in one of those itty bitty cars I'm sure you'd prefer everyone in. My last accident involved getting hit by 3 semis...can imagine that happening while in a teeny tiny rice burner?
I'm sorry but I disagree with you, people work hard for their money and should be able to enjoy it anyway they want.
You are trying to dictate how I live my life. You have no right to tell me what type of vehicle to drive. Dictate is the beginning of Dictator and the everyone loses their freedom. Do you honestly what to take away peoples freedoms because you don't like the vehicles they drive..it's absurd
I'm going to make you scream in frustration.

I'm not certain this is still true as there has been recent efforts to close the loophole, but there is a large vehicle tax break for farmers to help with the cost of necessary equipment like pickup trucks. Unfortunately the way the laws are written, a dentist can get a tax break if he or she buys a large vehicle such as a truck or SUV.

So not only is there not a tax incentive for people to buy smaller vehicles, there is or at least has been a federal tax incentive to buy a large SUV or truck. This nation is really screwed up.
Not practical in many areas of the US. Not enough public transportation.
