I'd be PO'd. Call him back, and be firm, yet polite. Threaten to bring them to small claims court. Thant might get them to change their mind. And if they don't - really do bring them to court!
Does the UK have a BBB? (Better Business Bureau) Or, did you pay cash for the transaction? If it's on credit, you can claim the product was inferior and may get away without paying until you and the owner come to a solution. In the US, shops have to have signs posted No Returns/No Refunds. Go in and take pics in the store to show they don't have the signs up, providing they don't. Then, if you do go to court you can explain that their policy wasn't revealed until you complained to them. Good luck! If nothing else, I'd set the couch up in front of their store, sit on it and tell everyone who walks in how they ripped you off!
No way you should have to accept merchandise that you are not satisfied with.
Ummm, are you saying you saw them prior to ordering? If so, it's your fault... or maybe it's your family's fault for saying they are 'unsatisfactory' after you ordered them. Either way, don't worry about it. they are yours and you can live with them, since you picked them out in the first place.
