Paper or plastic?

which type of shopping bag is more healthy?

Answer:
Recycled bags are a lot more eco-friendly! I have an old canvas bag that i keep in the car and i try to use that as much as possible.
bringing your own tote bag to the shopping center helps even more. But paper is much better than plastic
Neither! Plastic should be obvious, it takes tons of gallons of oil just to produce them let alone the fact that if and when they break down they release toxins into the air. Paper seem like a better choice between the two but the reality is that tons of trees have to be cut down in order to make the paper and it's unlikely that those trees are replaced. So choose something reusable like a canvas tote bag!
A durable cotton tote might be the preferable choice.
It really is a toss up for me.plastic does not degrade like paper.however; making paper kills trees which are important to keep our environment alive.go figure.
It depends on who you asks. Ask a tree hugger and they'll say paper, ask someone who is future concious and they'll say plastic since plastic is made from oil. I prefer cloth. Stores like Trader Joe's and Whole foods promote the use of cloth tote bags, and even offer discounts or donations of food in exchange for each time you use a cloth bag.
of those 2 evils, paper.
and yes trees are a renewable resource but why when you can use cloth bags? Here the grocery stores will give 2ยข credit per bag you use :)
Is it alot of $? Nah but for my family it's about a buck a month which can be used for something else - like a 1/3 of a gallon of gas
Its a personal choice, think of what you can reuse the bags for. Or turn in used bags to others who can reuse them. Goodwill, food banks, thrift stores all reuse bags, paper or plastic. I use plastic bags to make rugs(waterproof), great for back door, make great shower mats. Rugs make gifts to someone who believes in reusing! As we all should learn to do! Also get a couple cloth bags to shop with, carry items home, empty and use over and over!
Paper is healthier for the environment as it can be recycled. Plastic bags fill an unbelievable amount of space in land fills and take decades to decompose. Also, the making of plastic bags is harmful for the environment.
Neither, If you take into consideration what it takes to make both. I say recycle around the house...old clothes, bedding, fabric etc. spend some GF time making reusable stylish totes.
paper daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
If you are at the store and have only those two choices, then paper. They may kill trees, but at least they don't break down into toxic chemicals that leech into our land and water. But cotton/canvas tote bags with sturdy handles are the soundest choice of all.
If you use your own bags you will make a positive impact on the enviornment. Plus, most stores will give you a discount for using your own bags.
That would be paper. Even though you can reuse the plastic over and over, it will still end up in the landfill for 100 years. Choose paper if you have to or use the canvas reusable sold at most stores and get credit back. You can even bring in your old paper bags and reuse them, Trader Joe bags are great for that, and they can be recycled when they are done.
a lot of people are saying paper, because it's biodegradable. But plastic bags can be recycled--a lot of grocery stores have bins to drop them off. And what I've read is that while paper is biodegradable, making paper bags is actually harder on the environment and creates more pollution than making plastic bags.
It's not just a matter of using a tote either. Be conscious--if you are on a shopping trip to multiple stores, ask to put items for the second and third stores in your bags you already have. and use a tote. they are fun and reusable and not a strangulation/smothering risk for small children and animals like plastic (or even paper bags with handles) are.
neither, canvas is the way to go.
I would have to say paper is better but make sure that where you live, recycles the paper bags.
Paper is better than plastic because:
1. It is a renewable source. You can plant trees.
2. It desintegrates in landfills. Plastic stays around forever.

Cloth type sacks are good, but let's face it...how many times do you run to a grocery store on the way home from work. Who carries those bags everywhere they go?

I go with paper, then I use the paper bags to bag up my recycleables.
Paper is MUCH better than plastic (that's why San Fran banned all plastic bags) because they are recycleable, and do not use fossil fuels to make. Plastic bags can not be recycled or decomposed, and can deteriorate our soil and choke living organisms in the ocean.
Neither one is a really good choice. Paper is a natural and renewable resource, but requires a great deal of other resources to process. Plastic is a petroleum product, which is definately not great!

I try to keep several reusable bags in the car, they're cheap if you get them secondhand at garage sales or co-ops. I do use paper sometimes, as inevitably I will forget to put the reusables back in the car, but a double bagged bag can be used many times before it's torn up.

I'm cheap, so the old paper bags get turned into other crafty things. :)
I agree that using a cloth bag would be better. But, I shop on a military base and I'm not even sure if I could use one.

They bag with paper and I re-use them for everything from book covers to wrapping the packages I send overseas (it's the same as packing paper). I also use it for wrapping paper after I let my daughter "decorate" it with markers.
paper is better than plastic because it can be recycled.
Paper is better than plastic. Paper can be recycled and it might already have been made from recycled paper. Paper bags also decompose better than plastic.

I try to avoid bags all together. I have a few cardboard boxes in the trunk of my car (you can get some free at Costco), so all I do is put my groceries in those instead of using bags (albeit you'll get some weird looks from cashiers when you say no bags). I just bring the bagless shopping cart to the car and put the groceries in the boxes.
paper, because it's recyclable. Plastic is not biodegradable but usually winds up in landfills anyway.
Reusable canvas bags really are the best choice but of the two you suggested, paper is better. Not only is it biodegradeable but it can be used to put your recycleables out for the recycling crew, plastic cannot.
Oh! And the handles from plastic bags can get wrapped around the necks of animals.
Paper is the best choice if you have to choose between just those two. A reuse-able canvas bag is the best one of all. But, if you have to use paper or plastic, paper is by far the best choice. It can be recycled and breaks down in a land fill if you just throw it away. And you can plant more trees to make more paper. The plastic takes decades to break down not to mention you need petroleum based products to make them. They are not recyclable and not from renewable resources.
try bringing a tote bag to the place. Both are unhealthy, but if you must choose, i prefer paper
I usually bring my own cloth bags. If I forget, I use plastic...because I can bring them back to the store and recycle them. No killing trees involved.
Neither. Use one that you can use for years. The checkers have a difficult time dealing with it, but they will adjust.

In Europe they don't hand out bags like here in the US. You bring a reusable bag or backpack or else you pay for a bag. It is a much wiser system, and you don't end up with a closet full of plastic or paper.
Actually neither are better for the environment.the best thing to do is bring your own cloth bags and use them everytime.in a few other countries they are actually charging people for their plastic and paper bags to encourage others to bring cloth bags.
