What are your ideas to tackle the most pressing issues of our day in energy, purified water, and logging?

What is your idea(s) of how to take current proven technologies used in some fields of practical application that can be slightly modified or adapted to fit our growing needs of consumption in such areas as electricity, purified water, and logging without hurting our environment?

My example: No one wants nuclear power plants in their back yard, but nuclear power is a cheap and very effective method of using technology to increase our power supply without leaving a large carbon trail. My solution: Build stationary off shore nuclear submarines with the sole intent to send power to major coastal cities, as well as use the excessive heat to evaporate sea water into a piping system that'll send fresh purified H20 to cities increasing their supply of needed purified water.

All ideas are welcome, even emerging technologies, but please focus on proven practical methods in your answers.

Answer:
I would say something similar..at this time, Nuclear power is the favorable way to generate electricity without belching massive quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I would not off shore the nukes though. I would have the Nuclear Energy Commission adopt a single reactor design so that every reactor in the Country were identical (the France model). The reduces cost of construction and the cost to training personnel to run the facilities and makes inspection and compliance monitoring easier.

As far as the USA is concerned, we are bracketed by 2 oceans, and leveraging Nuclear power, we should begin building huge desalination plants along each coast to offset the wacky weather patterns associated with Global warming.

Hopefully in another 20 - 40 years, nuclear fusion will come into it's own, and we can begin phasing out fission plants for fusion plants.
I like ipsydoodles answer, and I have an idea to add to that. If we could resalinate the ocean water by building large solar heated desalination plants that pipe the freshwater inlands, we could correct the damaging freshening of the oceans caused by the global warming, and thus help revive the conveyor belts in the oceans again, and we would once again get inland precipitation, and post pone the big freeze. Global warming is just a precursor to an ice age, with terrible drought as well as cold. I live in Northern Arizona, and last winter was the coldest and driest I can remember, and this summer looks to be the hottest and driest I have ever seen. I have never in all the 18 years I've lived here , seen so many dead trees, as I have THIS year. I'M worried about what NEXT year is going to look like. I guess a lot of it is up to us, the "intelligent" specie.
