Why are wind turbines not invested more as an alternative energy source for residential homes?
Answer:
Some because you need the right conditions. Some because it's usually more expensive than just buying power from the electric company.
Wind power is increasing all around the world, but the best way now seems to be large wind farms in the right places owned by the electric power companies and connected to the power grid.
That is a very good question. The only one I can think of is the expense. They cost a large amount of capital to set them up.
They take up too much space... But back in the 70s in the hey day of Mother Earth News they were touted for use on your small self sufficient farm. Even had plans how to built them using used parts (car alternators, fork lift batteries, etc) and listed places to get low voltage DC lights and such... kind of cool, actually.
it's because.. 1= no one wants them in "their backyard" or where it may "obstruct the views"
and 2= because of the oil lobbiests that continue to squash any alternate power sources.
Wind turbines are considered a success if they produce power for 25% of the day. The wind is either to slow or too high and needs to be shut down risking damage. Plus the visual pollution of seeing large windmills on every hill top. The limited power produced does not justify the expence yet.
India is using wind turbines to power their growing indusrty because they have an area of more consistent wind strength to give a more consistant flow of energy.
I like solar energy, but I live in the sun belt. The northwest and northern midwest have less sunshine to make power so wind turbines might be more viable but not a total solution.
prolly cuz you cannot rely on the wind.
Because they are not cheaper than what we use.
