What are the main causes of noise pollution, and what can be done about it?

Do you think visitors to your conuntry have a positive or negative effect on the economy, culture and the environment?

Answer:
Noise pollution depends on who you are. The EPA typically considers Noise Pollution to be of a man made source. Things such as cars, planes and trains are the most common. Other noise pollution can be loud stereos, concerts (especially at outdoor venues) and rockets. There are various levels of noise pollution, and they cause various levels of harm. Some, like the drone from a nearby highway are simply annoying. Others like a concert can cause hearing loss. Noise pollution can also cause problems with animals, causing them to be distracted, or attracting them to places they don't belong, or more commonly, scaring them off, sometimes scaring them out of their normal habitat.

The best way to handle noise pollution is to avoid it. However, some ideas for if you live near a noise generator: Place a privacy fence around your yard, these fences reflect the noise back and up. Plant large evergreen plants near your property line. If space and material is available, place an earthen berm. If you cannot put distance between you and the noise source, put as much material. Soft material (plants and cloth) absorb the noise, hard materials (stone, wood and plastic) reflect the noise. If you can use some of all of these options, you can create a nearly silent area where no sound can reach you.

Visitors may be a cause of noise pollution considering that their travel methods often include aerial flights. However, they are crucial to our economy, since they often a major part of revenues in some areas.
I am not sure if it influences the culture, but it may affect the environment if foreign plants and animals which might drive out native plants.
The main causes of noise pollution are generally due to the activities of man. The most intrusive are those generated by engines (Aeroplanes, motors of all kinds, trains, vehicles, machinery, etc..) Then there are those caused by audio equipment :radios, hi-fi systems, loudspeakers, sirens, alarms. Another kind are those produced for specific events like explosions, fireworks, bangers, gun fire and so on.
Finally there are the noises made by humans themselves, shouting, screaming , laughing or singing loudly.

There should be attempts to diminish the need to travel long distances for meetings , business etc... that could be dealt with by phone or web cam conferences. Those that could walk relatively short distances should try to do so instead of jumping in the car to cover a few hundred metres.Things like fireworks should only be sold for global events, not everyone's garden party. Ambulances and police cars should only use their sirens in real emergencies. People should have more consideration for those that surround them, and radio and television programme makers could try to abate the frenetic tones which have become more and more part of the modern scene. Nations and individuals should stop fighting and using weapons of death. There are many other things that could be done if people set their minds to it.
This is a very long question to answer, and your second question should really be posted as a separate question in itself. Personnally I do not think that visitors have a negative effect on the economy and culture of the nations which they visit, and, if anything, they are actually good for them , except for the global effect of their travelling on the environment.
