Whats the deal with pearls? cruelty involved?

my stupid sister just bought a pearl necklace.. does it involove crulety to any organism? someone plz tell me..

Answer:
They are generally farmed these days. The oysters aren't always killed when the pearl is taken from them but almost always. So it's sucks to be the oyster in this case. Is killing oysters cruel? You be the judge.
the only cruel thing about it is how much she had to pay for it when her boyfriend would have given her a free one
the oyster or clam it came out of is probably pretty pissed off
Well, the shell is forced open and a piece of irritant put into it to make the pearl, so it could be considered cruel
hehe if you consider a muscle cruelty to animals...
Generally pearls arnt that bad on environment.
They arnt as nearly destructive as gold or jewels on the environment.

A good pearl will have a diamond plant some bits of grain in an oyster and they will grow there and be happy.
Many Years later they come back and they oyster develops a coating on some of these grains in the shell...
These are called pearls.. The ones that develop well and very circular and big are worth a bit...
The oyster has a happy life and is normally sold to be eaten anyway.
