So World Environment day is celebrated to create awareness about these issues among the people around the world.

The World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening convention of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. For this, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was created, also in the same year, to promote the goals of WED through stimulation of public awareness to the different plights of the environment. It seeks also to direct political attention to the environmental issues at hand. Thus, their ultimate goal is to move people to corrective action towards the embetterment of the environment.
To answer your question fully, the reason for the creation of WED is the promotion of issues for the development of a sustainable environment, one that future generations will be able to enjoy. Even back in 1972, many people had already realized the damage that was being done to the environment. If the trend were to continue, nothing much will be left to posterity. Therefore, they found it imperative that peoples and governments understand the consequences of defiling the environment due to ignorance, willful or not. This is the spirit behind WED.
