Is bleach harmful to your health?
Answer:
It is not so much bleach in itself but the chlorine in bleach that is most harmful. There are non chlorine, natural bleaches available from the healthfood store that are based on hydrogen peroxide, which turns into oxygen when it breaks down and deteriorates.
Also vinegar is an excellent all purpose cleaner and will work for most kitchen cleaning needs.
You shouldn't be bleaching all the time and people tend to overbleach. If you cut yourself and bleed, then cleaning it up with a natural bleach is apropriate but for every day kitchen spills it is overkill and in fact as an impact on the immune system because some findings are that over bleaching is like over prescribing antibiotics.
try vinegar
when diluted no, but if it was in-hailed from the bottled you'd loose some of your sense of smell and brain cells, but that is what you can buy, the non diluted form you can't buy at the supermarket, chemist and professions and colleges can. what you can buy isn't best for you but it isn't the strongest form of bleach
its only usually harmful if swallowed . try using clorox cleanup its properly diluted and a little goes a long way,
"its only usually harmful if swallowed "
And really, not even then. According to the CDC, it is not but they said to drink water to dilute it in your system. This is from experience of my then-17-year old son who mistakenly drank some diluted bleach being used to clean a bottle.
Chlorine bleach isn't too harmful either to the environment or to a person in small quantities. You've received some good advice already, I'll summarise and include a couple of other comments.
First, most people use much greater quantities of cleaning agents than they need. So whatever you use, be frugal and dilute with water. Furthermore, a good cleaning with soap and water or vinegar and water is sufficient for all but the most dangerous 'contamination' - in other words, you don't really need to disinfect your whole kitchen. Surfaces that come into contact with raw meat drippings DO need to be disinfected, or if you have a very sick person in your house (tuburculosis, hepatitis, etc), then yes, use an agent that is dedicated to disinfection, but otherwise, just clean thoroughly with a simple cleaner.
Second, chlorine bleach is dangerous to users under certain circumstances. Never mix it with ammonia, and be careful when mixing it with other cleaning agents and household chemicals (including such innocuous things as vinegar). Bleach is a base, and if it is mixed with an acid or a chemical that behaves like an acid, it will give off toxic gas. An aunt of mine went unconscious and hit her head in the tub when she mixed bleach with ammonia. Also, chlorine bleach has been linked to asthma in children who swim a lot indoors. Now pool bleach is slightly different from cleaning bleach, but it's still good to keep in mind.
Third, hydrogen peroxide is a very good disinfectant, but it is particularly prone to chemical reactions that might dissolve glue, corrode metals, etc. Despite being a fan of H2O2, I wouldn't myself use it to disinfect my kitchen. I am particular to diluted household ammonia, which - although it has a strong smell - dissipates and breaks down much more quickly than bleach, and is less corrosive than bleach. I buy a small bottle (1 litre), dilute it 1/20 with water in a spray bottle, and use it on everything except my cutting board, which I put in the dishwasher. It's great!
Good luck!
Yes bleach is very harmful to your health because the feums could be dangerous to your lungs and you heart and your brain.
Katie,
You have a lot of good answers here. I would just add that very few things in life are harmful if done (or used) in moderation. Just don't overdo it and you'll be OK.
You can get a chemical burn with undeluted bleach. Your skin can or if breathed in, your lungs and throat can be chemically burned. We use it at the hospital in surgery on spills of blood or other body fluids. We use 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.
vinegar is ur natural everything

Bleach is EXTREMELY harmful. It is a corrosive which can cause respiratory illness, burn the skin and eyes. If mixed with the wrong thing, ie ammonia, the fumes can be deadly.
There are companies who make products without bleach and other harsh and hazardous chemicals.
