For anyone who cares and has a moment.thanks?

The truth is that a majority of people don’t care about important issues that could determine their future and that of their families. These kinds of people only worry about trivial things or don’t care about anything at all but themselves and that’s a fact. As you’ve probably noticed, one the major topics that need immediate attention is global warming and the protection/restoration of the environment, but to some people its not important. I work for Environment Florida, and we basically work to get fundraising to restore the everglades. Now so far I’ve been only been to college campuses and what I’ve seen has amazed me. I usually ask a person if they either have a moment for the environment or if they have a minute to help save the everglades. Now it’s amusing and disappointing at the same time to see some people’s response. Some people tell me they don’t have time because they’re in a rush to get to class or somewhere else but what’s funny is that just walk away taking they’re time or start looking around for awhile. I mean all I asked for was just one minute out of their entire day, and it’ sad that they can’t even spare that amount of time to something that really matters. Other people start making long excuses that take over 3 minutes long….with those wasted 3 minutes, I could have already asked that person for a donation. Some people make excuses such as they’ve signed up several times, but in reality you only need to sign up once…so they are a bunch of liars. Now the reason I’m say this is because people need to take action. We cannot leave these issues to be left in the hands of some corrupted political figures. The U.S. was built on a democratic government which was made for the people, therefore if we want our voices to be heard, people must take action and show to the government what they stand for and believe is right. Now I’m not trying to be a mean person but the reality is that when some natural disaster or misfortune occurs, those people who did not bother to spare 60 seconds of their lives would be complaining to the government and saying why haven’t they done something about it and taken action? What I truly don’t understand is that how can people be so ignorant and selfish? I mean c’mon if it wasn’t for the earth and its resources which allow the ability to sustain life, then we wouldn’t be here. We as the human race should be considerate that we live on a planet that sustains life and therefore try to protect and conserve it because reality is, once the earth run’s out of resources or we as a race destroy the earth’s ozone layer with CFC’s, continue polluting the air and water, and kill off the other species on this planet, then our future is predestined to an extinction of the species on planet earth. To some of you, I may seem as a “tree hugger,” “environmentalist,” “weirdo,” or “loser” but with all sincerity I don’t care. You may be laughing at me now, but in the near future if things don’t change, I don’t think you wont. know in the end that I did all I can for our planet and I would be satisfied with the good feeling that I’ve done a good deed, achieved something great, and actually gave more than 60 seconds of my life to the environment.

Answer:
Wow, dude! You REALLY need to get a life... Chill out.
The way we trash our home scares me too...
I didn't read it all but agree except its too late to undo whats coming we can only hope to lessen the effect and pray there is something livable for our children!
Its really scary when people like Bush who denied for so long
this was happening jump on the band wagon. Now we know its bad, as if the 10 minute sunburn isn't clue enough!
You really should cut that down or break it up a little. Not many people are going to read the whole thing.
man you need to get a life!!!!
interception surveys and donations make people uncomfortable.
it doesn't matter whether your trying to get a donation or trying to give some one money if you approach them on the street they are going to feel insecure.

also you need to appear at the same level as the person your talking to. A long explanation that you have given above will only make people tune out. if you want to exhibit behaviour changeing campaigns you need to know you major point and say it quickly.

even i dint bother finish reading your above statement and im a natural resource management student.
It wasn't really a question... so this won't really be an answer :) I agree that people need to wake up and pay attention to polution and the effects it's having on out planet.
I was just thinking today how gorgeous the world would be if people dissapeared and it could re-grow itself. Maybe it will happen soon, though, cause there's a possibility we'll all blow eachother off this planet.
Thanks for what you do! It's nice to know people out there are actually doing what they talk about... keep it up.
And all you people who don't care, well, you will. Better later then never right? :) (It will be fun to see their faces...)
Global warming is very scary! It is sad too.I am glad that we, do have very few people like you making an effort.I just wanted to commend you.
Hey, I'm with ya 100%!

However, instead of going on and on about that (because you and I are of the same mind and neither of us need to convince eachother and also because you posted this as a question), let me try to help you with this.

Reasons why people might not give you our your cause the time of day and ways to still get them involved:

1. they really are busy and on their way to class (some really are), have a flyer with some brief info. - like some quick facts of what's happening with the everglades and why we need to act - with your contact info. and a donation slip where they can call or mail it in when the time is better for them

2. they are (as you said) just not thinking big picture and don't want to be involved - see if you can enhance a picture to show what the everglades will look like in 20 years if we don't act, blow it up, and stand it up next to you. That way, they might be curious and ask on their own. You need to get their attention

3. You know when you walk into a store and a sales clerk comes up to you immediately and asks if they can interest you in this or that and then hovers around you? Doesn't that irritate you? That's how a lot of people feel. And with all the stuff they have to deal with just trying to walk down the street or get to their next class, when everybody wants to ask them for change or ask for their time or this or that... it gets annoying and people thing "Man! I'm just trying to get from point A to point B and do what I gotta do and I can't go 10 feet without someone trying to "sell" me something!" Do you know that feeling? I worked in S.F. for 5 years, trust me, I know that feeling and it does get mighty irritating after a while. SO, what you gotta do is let them come to you. You can't force things down people's throats, you have to let them make the choice to help. Of course, you can pursuade them to do so (and you should with this cause!), but you still have to give them space and the freedom to choose it. Also, let me share this experience with you. I work for a health insurance company and recently did open enrollment meetings - basically members would walk into a room where me (representing my company) and a bunch of other people (representing other companies) would try to get them to enroll in our plan vs. someone elses. It started to feel like a flee market. So, what I did, was set up my booth, set a chair accross from the table from me, and I sat down and smiled and said hi to people when they walked by. By me doing that, it let people know that I believed enough in our product to not have to push it into someone's face like a used car dealer. I knew they needed what I had to offer. And by having the chair there for them to sit in, it said "come sit and talk with me like we're humans, I won't bite and I want to hear what you have to say too." It worked big time. People came and sat and talked with me, and when the other potential members walking through saw this, they came over to hear our discussions and pretty soon, I had a group of people surrounding my booth and talking about what their concerns were and how my company's products could address them. Make sense? Try to make the interaction more human, more give and take. It is, after all, their interest as much as yours and mine, and they'll see that easier if you don't make it seem like you're too eager for them to join up.

I think people are interested (and more would be if they understood)... you just gotta get them talking and listening... getting their attention is so key!

I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and thank you so much for helping us all out like this!
I am with you. I am not a tree hugger persay, BUT I do my best to take care of the environment, whether it be my actual work or donations. I think the work you do, whether it be for money or volunteering is commendable. Keep it up pimpin'.
I so know how you feel. I live in a ski resort town in CA and I moved here because I love nature. Till I actually realized what the town is turning into there expanding the mountain trying to make more money that means more people more trash and you know what I mean. They promote all the biodesiel buses to keep the conservationist happy like there trying to help but there not fooling me or them probably. All they care about is the money not the skiing the fun familes have when they come here the memories no its how can we get everyone to come here and make lots of money how can we make it bigger. The locals cant even afford to buy houses here the teachers have to live an hour away. People just dont care anymore people only care about themselves and I always wonder what can I do but its like no one cares they think its crap. I wish we could live like the old days before cars before real estate before all that and just live.People think the climate change isnt because of global warming, you know we usually get 50 feet of snow...This year we got 10. glaciers arent melting just because theres a reason people... I just want to hit every self absorbed jerk who only cares about there money that cant save the world people. Just cause your rich doesnt mean you cant receyle or something.JUST DO SOMETHING everything helps.
I cannot figure out what your question is. This seems more like an answer and it is too long.
"What I truly don’t understand is that how can people be so ignorant and selfish?"

Please be cognizant of the culture. You may realize that this method you have been working on does not work. TRY SOMETHING ELSE. If you are really serious about saving the environment/everglades/etc. You are barking up the wrong tree. Try your local politicians/newspaper/evening news, etc. Use the internet. Knowledge is power, but delivering it to somebody is harder than steel. I recently read a statistic that roughly 80% of the population would be willing to take part in environmentalist causes if:
educated resolutely on the matter
given a free choice
given a convenience, which may even be at a cost to them

You are an American, you know, why aren't you trying to start your own eco-business, anyway?
I take offence when people say that if you do not believe in the global warming theory, you do not care about the environment. Following leaders blindly, and without question is dangerous. I think we can all agree to that. You may disagree with me, but I respect your opinion, but please do not insinuate that I do not care about the environment.
I dont like people approaching me on the street, at all. I blow off environmental types, voter registration types, and everyone else.

What the various advocacy groups need to realize is that people will give their time and money to a cause, IF the believe in that cause. People will seek out groups that believe in their cause. Approaching someone on the street (or campus) only serves to annoy people.
ignore those people that are syaing "get a life"
Wow! That was really hard to read. You really needed to break this up a little.
The biggest thing is WE need to set out intentions for the day. We need to purposely start each day with making the world a better place for everyone today and in the future.
If we did that we would fix so many things from economy, global warming, better legislation , less corrupt politicians and smarter children. The list can go on and on.
Every thing we do every thought every word spoken affects everything in the world.
