If everyone in the world stopped smoking, what sort of effect would it have on climate change?

I just wondered if any studies had been done about this. Surely that would be billions of tiny carbon emissions?

Answer:
Very interesting question I never though of that
Although I hvn't read any study on that, but stop smoking will surely help in mitigating climate change through its direct (small contribution) and indirect effects.

As, stop smoking will result in following activites:
1) Land currently in use for tobacco cultivation can be used for forestry or some other crops resulting in reduced pressure on forest lands.
2) Energy used in producing cigrattes or other such things can be used to produce some more useful things.
3) Budget use to treat the health problems due to smoking can be utilized effectively for other purposes.
It depends on how long you have been smoking and how affected your loungs are.I suggest after you stopped smoking you move and live in a place with higher weather humidity like a warm beach.Somewhere like Florida. Humid weather helps you not to hurt your loungs while coughing as your throat keeps the moisture more easily. In dry weather your throat will tend to lose moisture more easily. It is critical when you know you are going to have more coughs as the loungs try to clear themselves. Also consult your personal Doc. for any additinal syrup you may need to control your coughs.
Personal Experience:
I used to smoke 2 Pacs of King size Full flavour Captain Black + 3 to 5 Choco flavoured cigars daily for number of years. So you can immagine how messed up my loungs were.
I decided to stop and I moved to a tropical region for a good rest.I should mention that in my hometown in winters the weather would reach" -15 C"at nights and the weather was really low in humidity. It took me 9 month of daily long distance swimming(1.5miles+) and gym exercise to clean my loungs from that Green and gray mess that you see each time you cough.you know what I'm talking about man. That exercise helped me to regain my stamina and stopped my coughs.
It worked for me and I hope it'll work for you too.
My Grand father smoked for 55 years before he stopped smoking at 75 years of age.The Dry weather in his residence area caused him to have his coughs until he passed away at 87.
I do suggest for living in warmer area with higher humidity, using steam generating stuff at home, and consulting your personal Doc. for additional med you may need.
For everyone out there,Stop smoking for God sake.

Wow, this is one question i would love to see answered, But i would have to say i think it does. i mean think of all the chemicals people breath in when smoking, well those chemicals are also going into the air. Plus all the litter from the filters and pollution form fires caused from smoking.

I guess we have to wait for a study. I would love to find out the results.
I agree,it would get rid of a lot of second hand smoke, therefore improve the ozone.Good observation..
You can estimate the effect, since a person's carbon emissions are about ten tons a year, they would have to smoke a lot of packs of cigarettes to make a difference.

However, the additional effects are significant. Smoking causes an economic cost, both personally and in community health care. Since most economic activity consumes electricity, any reduction in economic cost would reduce carbon emissions.
If all smokers just up and quit, half of them would end it all, as life would not be worth living, thus reducing the carbon footprint of humanity. The ones that were left would have much higher taxes as a result, and would end it all as life would not be worth living, thus reducing the carbon footprint of humanity. Once humanity is gone from this planet, there would probably still be global warming, but we wouldn't be around to care.
