Andrew O: Put it in perspective?
-Global Warming
-World hunger
-Acid Rain
-Cancer
-Ill-advised, belligerent leaders
No putting yes i believe so apreston60 ! or I'll report you.
Answer:
Thanks Jack,
I'll come back to this tonight and try and give it some thought and I'll post it later. Just wanted to let you know I saw the question.
Oh and Ha, ha on the apreston60 person. I don;t think they care if we report them though Jack.
OK, here you go.
So, just so we say it up front, it depends on whether we are talking the long-run or the short-run. In the Short-run:
1) World Hunger-kills the most per year. Not getting any better and systems to distribute food are very tenuous in the areas most at risk with very high population densities.
2) Cancer- Kills a lot, but tends to kill people at the end of their lives. Still it would be nice to defeat it and it is doable.
3) Ill advised belligerent leaders-bad policies kill people through economic subjugation and military interventions. Less killed from this per year than cancer right now. There is a chance that we could escalate to a world war with nukes, but I don't see it as likely.
4) Global Warming- If ice melts, oceans rise and can submerge low lying regions. Its already starting to occur in the Indian Ocean and it's a region that only takes a little sea level rise to flood a lot of land.
5) Acid rain- A subset of the universe of Global Warming issues and has not directly led to a lot of human death. It has affected a lot of plant life and can contaminate waterways and lakes.
6) Peak Oil- there's enough right now.
Long Run:
1) Global Warming- I think it will be the big danger in the future. Slow long cycles of increasing problems that could get overwhelming if we don't work to mitigate the effects now. the earth would survive it but humans and a lot of animals would have trouble.
2) World hunger- more people=bigger problems if we don't improve the agricultural system
3) Ill advised leaders- Bad leader can continue to implement bad policy making all tings worse
4) Cancer- pollution could lead to more cancer and drug resistant strains that we can't treat
5) Acid rain- again a subset of the warming issues
6) Peak Oil- there is a lot out there and economically speaking, people will switch from oil when it gets too expensive. There are tons of options when it comes to this.
1)
I-ll advised, beliigerent leaders
World hunger
Cancer
acid rain
global warming
Bad leadership, corruption, dictatorships, etc have caused more death and suffering than global warming ever will. Global warming has been trumped up by the media to the point of insanity. Al Gore and the media are definately not helping the Scientists who study global warming with any PR.
You forgot Peak Oil or the cutoff of a major portion of the worldwide oil supply. You want to see what a global economic crash or armageddon looks like? That makes those other things on your list seem petty by comparison.
Global warming and world hunger will feed off of each other. These are the top two problems the world faces, although I would replace "world hunger" with "extreme poverty". Acid rain has been in decline since we limited sulfur emmisions in the 1990s. You should note that we managed to do this without causing the economic collapse that alarmists predicted. In fact, economies continued to grow at an incredible rate despite these cuts, which proves that we can effect environmental change and not wreck the economy. Cancer is an individual problem. Ill advised, belligerent leaders are only a problem if they happen to have the world's most powerful terrorist organization or the world's most powerful military on a hair trigger. Wait a minute...
1) Global warming. If we don't reduce our greenhouse gas emissions it will lead to catastrophic climate change which will negatively impact the lives of virtually every person and species on Earth.
2) World hunger will be one of the impacts of global warming.
3) Ill-advised, belligerent leaders will be responsible for allowing global warming to happen.
4) Acid rain.
5) Cancer.
-Ill-advised, belligerent leaders
-World hunger
-Cancer
-Acid Rain
These are the only dangers I care to rank because they are the only problems that man can significantly effect.
Global warming falls somewhere between giant asteroid impact and alien invasion...
