nope, just don't write anything that shows who you are or who did it.
Carve on your own trees to your hearts content. On public property it is defacing public property or vandalism.
If you're cutting trees, keep in mind that it's like cutting into your own skin. It's ugly and thanks but no thanks, I like my trees as God made them.

Who's tree is it? If you are defacing public property or someone else's private property you could be on the hook for vandalism, but there is no specifically against carving your name in a tree.
I'm not sure if it is illegal but it can do damage to the tree. When any one carves into the bark of a tree it gives certain insects an enterance into the tree that may cause damage to it by dying from the inside out. Even though it takes a long time for this kind of damage to happen but I do feel that trees have feelings also.

It is not legal unless the tree isn't yours. Carving into a tree is the same thing as spray painting a building. Its vandalism.
illegal or legal, cant we just leave those trees alone? They dont mind our business anyway so let them be. Hey, what if we start carving our names on someone's butt or any body part?lol. Let us give trees the respect due them. They are a lot of service to mankind.
It depends who's tree it is. Don't carve on the governments trees.
