You inherit $40 million dollars, with a stipulation that you spend half of it on behalf of the environment.?

How would you appropriate the funds? How would you help the environment?

Answer:
Well i work on behalf of the Environment and i would gladly accept it on behalf of the Environment

What i would do with it would be to build a self sustainable and autosuficient safe haven, totaly isolated far from civilization ,on an island with high mountains and make a settlement high up
to use as a school ,ecotourist operation and escape hatch for those who would want to buy into it ,

To escape from what the world and its governments have in store for us

And that would take all of the 40 million
i`d be happy if i end up with a boat for an office

Why ?
Because that is what I can do.

To try and change things as part of another country or under a government is impossible for long

There is so much negative influence ,too much politics ,too many unstable governments and too much risk of War

$20 million worth in acreage keeps it from developers.
I would pay for poor and working class families to get solar panels, thereby helping the planet and lessen their monthly bills because they would have nearly no electric bill.
i guess some of it would go into alternate fuels that would be in the biodiesel field. hydrogen is dangerous - however there are cars that make their own.

not sure what else needs fixing. not much can be done about the greenhouse gases, and 20mil won't go that far anyway.
I moved to Washington state about two years ago, and one of the most amazing things here (out of many) is the area that is recovering from the eruption of Mount St. Helens. I would give that money to further the study of the recovery of the land from that blast. The knowlege gained from understanding the plant, animal, bird, and fish succession and recovery could be invaluable toward helping areas that have suffered ecological damage from fire, poor management, storms, or other causes throughout the world.
I would actually give $35 million probably.

I would set some aside for competitions like the ones for the space elevator and un-manned vehicles that focus on the enviroment. I would have three such contests, one for cutting need for fossil fuels by creating a solution that takes advantage of CURRENT technology. One is focused on removing CO2 and other greenhouse gases from the air evectively (although there are some prototypes of this working today). Third, I would develop one project to figure out how to meet global demand for non-renewable resources, while still protecting the resources, especially fossil fuels, trees, and fresh water.

$10 million would go to trying to stop global diseases. Money would especially be focused on Malaria, particularly in Africa, where 3,000 kids a day die from the disease. 50% of Malaria money would go to Misquito Nets, the other half to reasearch (Please go to the Nothing But Nets site, noted by Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated as being able to save many lives through the nets. Each net can save a family and only costs $10). Other disease research groups would also be funded.

The last $10 million would be used to cut the prices of efficient products, such as efficient transportation, light bulbs, burners, etc. This would also pursuade some farmers to switch to alternative farming practices that don't erode the soil.

I would also try to help pursuade the world to do something about the current global situation, and where we could be going if we don't stop.
Go to some smoke filled Vegas casino and "donate" it. ;)
I would buy property within sight of the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport and put up the biggest wind generator I could afford.
Half of it would go to research on enviormental hazards to human health & treatment of these illnesses.
The other half to rain forest preservation.
I would dump it all into this http://www.first-molecule.com and make billions
I would buy 15 million dollars worth of prime hunting land and plant 5 million dollars worth of trees on it, then put a fence around it and have a private hunting reserve.
