If I were to run a vehicle on E85, or even E100, would my vehicle still need a cataylic converter?
Answer:
The first catalytic converters were rather energy in-efficient, but we have come a long way since then and now they have little effect. You would still need one though, especially if it was designed to actually run on pure ethanol (E100) because the higher compression ratio would result in more NO2, which needs to be converted to N2 and O2 to not produce smog.
And who exactly told you unburned ethanol wasn't a pollutant in the air? There are people in CA arguing to remove it from the fuel there because it is contributing to the smog more than 100% gasoline.
If your vehicle is not set-up for E85, you may damage its components, including the catalytic converter.

E85 is also FAR less efficient. Also the jury is still out on the long term effects of Methanol.
E85 is about 10% cheaper than regular gas..but it's about 20% less efficient.
Methanol takes 40% more energy to produce than it releases. SO what are the benefits of "alternative" fuels?
