1) Byproduct of the refining process of both oil and natural gas.
2) It's a liquid in the bottle but released it gasifies. It's used almost like stored natural gas and it powers furnaces, appliances, pool heaters, grills, in small vehicles like forklifts and for crop drying. 55% of US consumption is as a chemical feedstock.
3) Very widely as a chemical feedstock, as a heating and appliance fuel it is used in areas where there is no natural gas infrastructure - - generally rural areas.
4) Environmental benefits are that a leak gasifies and that it is stored above ground. Business benefits are that the fire code in 44 states requires that the tank owner (usually the dealer) fill the tank - so customers switch dealers less frequently than with heating oil, thus dealers' margins are more stable.
5) Drawbacks include small pipeline network (generally transported by truck outside the midwest) and, for dealers, the fact that hedging is mostly done off the MERC. The tight supply chain means there's some volatility but it's less than with heating oil because when prices go up the chemical companies switch to other feedstocks.
6) See above and see links.
Also see the Annual Report for any propane distribution company, most are MLPs such as Suburban Propane.
I used to bank companies in the industry, trust me on the above.
I think you need to do your own homework!!
This dosn't answer all your questions, but it's a great example of how it's being used, and a very brief and simple description of it's benefits.
