There's a lot of debate about this, even among the experts. Most think that we still have time to avoid the worst effects of global warming, though there are a few who think it's too late.
The general agreement is that we need to start taking action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions significantly within the next decade. If we don't, then we'll have to work even harder to reduce them sufficiently in the future, and we may not be able to manage it. The longer we wait, the more greenhouse gases will be in the atmosphere, and the bigger and quicker reductions we'll have to make in our emissions. That's why we have to act ASAP.
Some people will say 'oh well we need to wait until it's 100% proven that we're causing global warming', but delaying will make it harder to slow global warming in the future. We'd benefit in other ways by taking action immediately, like becoming less dependent on foreign oil and creating less pollution, so there's no reason not to start right now, except that many people aren't willing to do it.
To specifically answer your question, I've seen projections that in order to avoid the worst consequences of global warming we need to reduce our emissions by 60% by 2030, 50% by 2050, 80% by 2050, and even by as much as 90% by 2050. To meet any of these reductions, we need to start very soon.

We never could "save" the world from global warming, because we simply lack the ability to effect the energy output of the sun. Sorry to burst your bubble.. but we're just not that big of a deal.

for years this country has known about energy crunches and made laws to require cars to be more fuel efficient
no because they discovered that we cause global warming the more biger the population gets the more effect that globle warming can be its not jest pollution.
I think the world will be fine. Question is, can we save ourselves? I'm sure mankind's presence has some affect on global warming, but I think (and I could be wrong) its negligible. Volcanos and natural fires have been polluting the atmosphere bajillions of years before we came on the scene. There will always be alarmists painting doom and gloom, though. A few decades ago the impending doom was global cooling (for reals)! As someone else mentioned, its also contingent on the sun's behavior.
However (with all that being said... or typed), I do think we need to be good stewards of the earth. We should strive for ways to pollute less and leave the world in a better shape than we found it.
We can't totally stop global warming. But if we start to work on it very soon, we can reduce it enough so that we can easily cope with its' effects. If we wait until it starts getting really bad (10-30 years, one of the more uncertain things about global warming), the changes we will have to make will be much more radical.

I believe that it is probably too late. It is not a Hollywood movie with Ben Affleck. Concerts and Leonardo Di Caprio coming in a limousine that probably spends gallon per mile and then preaching about environment will not solve the issue. There are two main factors that will definitely cause wars and destruction.
1. Water. In ten years scientist believe that 40 states in USA will have to cope with shortage of water. Since water is becoming more and more expensive certain city authorities have decided to sell water supplies to private vendors. Overall this is a good solution since water will be managed better but shortage will eventually appear.
2. Overpopulation. This growth in China and India connected with probable rise in sea level will create huge migrations which will lead to starvation, diseases and eventually wars. What is a better reason for war than water. I am sure George Bush is regretting that this did not happen during his mandate since then he would be able to demonstrate his war tactics ability.
When considering solutions, besides switching to environmental friendly energy source human population should implement severe restrictions on population growth. But you can not say: Ok. you can have only one child. Right of a woman is to have as many kids she wants and feminism movement will be damned if some small issue such as survival of human race contradicts that. Economically there has to be solution for better managed retirement funds since people would not have kids to rely on to support them.

I suppose this would be an issue if global warming was an issue. We are more likely to lose the world to an asteroid.

I wouldn't subscribe to doomsday predictions. The world's climate has never been constant. The coldest point in the last 10,000 years was only 140 years ago. Medieval temperatures were higher on average than they are today.
Do you think that plants and animals are unable to adapt to temperature changes? The reality is, if the climate did change, everything would adapt.
To save the world from Global Warming we would have to reduce the production of Carbon Dioxide to very close to zero.
We would have to return to an existence very similar to the hunter gatherers of the stone age.
We would have to force every country in the world to go along.
We do not have the political will or the military capability to force all of the countries of the world to cut their carbon dioxide emissions to zero.
What we must do is start now to plan to mitigate the effects of Global Warming.
The sea levels will rise. Fortunately most areas can be proteceted by dike systems similar to those of Holland which hold back the sea.
Hurricanes will become stronger and more frequent. We must help the poor countries upgrade their disaster preparedness for hurricanes.
There will be droughts. We must help the poor countries of the world with supplemental water supplies and desalination plants.
We cannot stop Global Warming and we never could have stopped Global Warming.
Fortunately we can mitigate the effects of Global Warming so they will have little if any effect on our lives.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
As you most likely know by now-Global warming is a natural event but humans have made it worse.
The time tables, as to when & what may occur are NOT set in stone-We, are NOT that good.
The effects & degrees of effects, due to global warming, are not set in stone either.
The world will go through its cycle of global warming and events will occur at various times. How sever they will be and will we all, or at least some of us, survive them-no one can really say for sure at this time.
So in the mean time-just do your part for a planet that you call home.

the real issue is people don't want the earth to get hotter, because it makes PEOPLE uncomfortable. you can't make the earth adapt to you- you need to adapt to the earth's changes. cuz its WAY more powerful than any or all of us.

It's too late. Too little caring not enough action. We have known for years that we were in a downward spiral and no one did anything to stop it. Who was that car maker in the 1920's? He was bankrupted by all the major car companies as well as the oil industries? His cars got about 80mpg. But since it would take money from all the above mentioned, they buried him and his vehicles.
In 20 yrs we will be talking about global cooling again. Regardless, the science doesnt support global warming and contrary to the leftists statements, 99% of scientist dont back it either, that is a number they throw out to stop debate. Their data is flawed and their models are as well. For crying out loud they dont even include water vaper in their greenhouse gas contribution calculations and it accounts for 95% of all greenhouse gases. Humans account for 1/3 of a percent.
