What's the etiquette for recycling compostables?
I have a green Trash can for Compostables.
On the cap it reads "No Plastic bags". So I wonder how people can manage this.
I have a small trash can in the kitchen with a plastic bag inside for rests of food and such.
So do I have to empty the bag inside the can (yuk!) or can I tie the bag up and drop it with the smelly content in the big green can? Is that the right way or will that deem it useless?
Answer:
We compost our our kitchen waste by putting it in a plastic worm farm so the worms eat it and turn it into garden fertiliser. We have a stainless steel bucket in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. We put all the scraps in it and then empty it into the worm farm every other day. We use stainless steel because it's easy to clean and doesn't absorb smells like plastic and it will last forever.
Sounds like your greenwaste will be useless if you put it in a plastic bag first and then in the collection bin. Try using an easy clean bucket to collect it inside and then empty it into the collection bin daily- this way it won't smell and will be easy to rinse the bucket clean.
Put them in a brown paper bag. Them you can put the whole thing in the green compostable can. Brown paper bags are bio-degradable and compostable.
I used to use a milk carton to collect compost. Then after its reuse, I threw it away. Now I have a large metal pot with a cover that keeps the compost till it goes out. It does need to be washed when it comes in. No plastic in the compost. Empty the bag and dispose of it, or use something else to collect in.
