Depending on the structure, some building can only withstand about 3 inches of soil if you'd cover the whole roof which isn't deep enough for trees or shrubs to lay roots in. They can only grow grasses which also looks nice and does help cleaning the air especially in cities.
It is a very good idea actually not only you are helping the environment get a cleaner air most specially in urban areas but you can plant youre favorite vegetables and having exercise at the same time which makes you healthy
I have seen this done in hi-rise hotels and restaurants. An outdoor eating area decorated on the 10th floor with potted plants and trees and of course a guard rail around the whole thing. Very nice. The sod roof on houses is something worth looking into also. What would you think of a vegetable garden on the roof of an apartment building? Maybe a few fruit trees? The kids might have a camp out up there in the summer time.

I heard they did that in Chicago and it really helped
My grandfather has six feet of dirt on top of his house. Besides dirt being an excellent insulator from both heat and cold, he can grow whatever he likes on top.
it would be a good way to combat the urban heat island effect. the temperatures on roofs of buildings could be lowered considerably, saving energy. it certainly could provide some habitat for nature, and you are right about the fact that it would be pleasing to see and smell. great idea!
picutre an upstairs courtyard above a fair trade coffeehouse, shaded with hanging plants from a screened frame. trees? if the structure will support it, why not a few small ones? a small garden? what could be fresher than that?
creative thinking such as this, where we use smart design to our advantage (the concept of permaculture may intrigue you) can go a long long way in helping us help our environment, save money, and enjoy our surroundings more. see what thinking 'without' the box can do!
Yes. Because
1) Due to reduce in soil area for plantation, farming, agriculture
2) To help ecosystem sustain in a ever growing CONCRETE JUNGLE.
3) You have a mini garden in your own house(or in the roof upstairs) where you can relax. Green color is supposed to relax the eyes.
4) Why NOT?
Hope this helps. (There can be many reasons given to explain this PERMA CULTURE Process, I chose to keep this simple).
