How much money would cities loose if they recycled all of their trash?
Answer:
Recycled or reused? Not everything is recycable, so forget that right away. The dump near my place does have a shed where people can put usable stuff they are getting rid of. Don't need a shovel, hose or wood stove any longer? Someone can. Society would save money as a whole if more recycling was done. Look into freecycle.com.
They wouldn't lose ... they would gain! Their cities would be cleaner and less polluted, landfills would be smaller and the businesses that are created from recycling metal, plastic, paper, etc. would create jobs.
If you privatize the garbage industry... like they did 100 years ago. There would be value in all RECYLCABLE items.
My grandfather... use to recylce everything in 1915 when he frist came to North America. He made a living... through out his entire life of 92 years. Eight kids, two houses.. always food on the table.
I think to answer your question... YES... the economy would lose at first! Why? Because... recycling is the opposite to consumerism. Buy it, use it, throw it away!
I remember seeing a thousand pairs of work boots goto the dump... but first... shredded such that NO one would utilize them or sell them! Why? because... if all 1000 pairs of boots were sold or given away for free... that would mean there would be 1000 less pairs of boots needed in the market.
Even if shipped to another country. it would still mean... less profit for the manufacturer... down the road!
Yes taking boots and reselling them wouldnt be in the best interests in the coporates eye. But, wouldnt it be useful to shread the boots, then give the pieces to the manufacturer to make new boots again. Most recycling plants do this already, its just that the consumer "us" really dont bother with presorting our trash. I worked on construction sites and copper wire waste is worth a small fortune if you take all the rubber off. I usually never had to buy my lunch with just scraps of wire ;-)
