If you can't compost, which is better for the environment for food scraps: down the drain or into the trash?
Answer:
Down the drain or to the people who don't have food !
It probably depends upon whether you have a septic tank or are on a sewer system. If you throw it into the trash, then it goes to a land fill. If you ignore the effects on the environment of the process of burying the refuse in the landfill and you ignore the process of processing waste into water and inert organic material, then it is a wash. But that is the difference. If you have a septic system, then that would be the clear winner in my mind, since nothing else needs to be done. Well, at least not for years and years.
Basically, I doubt there is hardly any difference between the two alternatives. Many areas are turning their former landfills into to green space or parks.
I used to live in a county that had a very futuristic sewage disposal system. It had large rural areas which made the system possible. The sewage was "cooked" and rendered sanitary. This was used to fertilize a large forest which was harvested and replanted. The harvested trees were chipped up to burn for the processing of the sewage. I never noticed any smoke in the area, so I suppose they had a very clean burning system.
into the trash!! Adding food and especially cooking oil to the water system where it solidifies, clogs drains and rots, leads to huge removal costs at cleaning plants that could be avoided if you limited the scraps you allow in there.
Plus compostable food added to landfill will breakdown eventually and will is going to a site spcifially designed to dispose of it.
