Answer:
Matthews, NC, right in Charlotte is a great place. Traffic is not so good, but compared to larger cities, it's ok. It's a super place for families! It is a very growing area.
Good high schools: Butler High, Providence High
Matthews is about 30 minutes from center city...but if that's where you will work, rush hour will add at least another 30 minutes to that drive. I don't know about a master plan, but if you want to look over the city's website it is www.charmeck.org and the town of Matthews is at www.matthewsnc.com. Hope this helps. If you're moving from a big city, you'll be used to traffic like this. But if not, you may get frustrated. It seems there aren't that many routes from here into town. But if you can put that aside, it's an awesome town to live in. We came from Baltimore about 6 years ago.
In a 2002 survey, Charlotte was rated 23rd among US cities with 47 hours per year delay calculated due to traffic. (Ref 1)

According to the Texas Transportation Institute 2003 study, Charlotte was ranked 39th in the nation and 6th for medium-sized cities. (Ref 2)

[I live near Washington DC (ranked #7) and Baltimore (#17). I don't recommend the traffic *or* the school around here. Good luck in Charlotte!]
