How to recycle books?
I have many books that are very out of date and totally unusable (e.g., many 30 year old hardback textbooks, a Time Life Science series that is 40 years old, etc). The information in them is so old that no one will take them. I am willing to expend the effort to remove the binding if I can recycle the resultant paper pages. Can these pages be placed in a recycle bin labeled "magazines"? It looks like the same type of paper. Any other ideas? Thanks for any help.
Answer:
There are organizations that recycle books and make them available to third world countries. Free-Read is one. Your library should be able to put you in touch with an organization. Some can be recycled also. Time-Life series is good for schools, even to cut for the pictures. Ask the school art teacher.
Contact your city recycling center. They should be able to tell you what to do in your area.
I just recently caleld the library to see if they wanted my old textbooks (and they didnt). They said it was ok to recycle them in whole using curbside.
Yes they can. Personally I would burn them since they are organic and represent a renewable resource--just kidding; I think!!
Why don't you try and post it on craigslist.com under the free section? Maybe someone can use it. If no one wants it then I would call the company that collects your recyclables and ask them. Good Luck! and thanks for being so concerned with the environment =)
Donate them to libraries or ebay it. Some antique book stores sell old magazine and they may want your books.
Donate them to your local friends of the library book sale. Many of those old books are still relevant, just because the information in them is old, does not make it out of date. Certain things, like electricity, and such just hasnt changed that much. Plus. new textbooks suck!
OR, you could start a termite farm and use the books for termite feed. That way, if it is ever discovered that termites are a renewable energy source, you will be all set! Remember me when you get rich!
Try Oxfam - they have special bookshops in various areas of London.
