What is the exact meaning of deforestation?write what you know about it?

Answer:
Deforestation
With the recent green tax bill being passed in the assembly the first thing that comes to my mind is the main cause of pollution.Yes what I am thinking about is deforestation.
Forests are the most natural resources for man.It has immense value to the human civilization.Forests constitute about one –third of the earth’s surface.Thousands of different species of plants are found in forests.
Forests provide a rich variety of goods usefut to industries and to rural people.Forest is one of the important factor for keeping a proper environment. It prevents erosion of the soil by wind and water. Forests increase the atmospheric humidity by releasing water vapor from sub soil during transpiration. And most essentially
forests reduce the atmospheric pollution by using carbon di oxide.
In spite of all this man is destroying forests relentlessly at an alarming rate. The destruction of forests is a serious threat to the economy and environment of the country. Deforestation leads to many short term and long term effects on the environment, land masses and animal species. According to an estimate the total forest area in India was 7000 million hectares in 1900 which have been gradually decreased to 2890 million hectares in 1975 .With the deforestation trend the country had only 2370 million hectares of forests by the end of 2001.
The main cause of deforestation is the ever increasing human population and live stock .As a result of the explosion of human population, the requirement of timber, wood, fuel, land for cropping and farming .Industrialization is also a major cause for elimination of forest areas .Development of industries such as paper industry, plywood industry which are based on forest products such as bamboos cause gradual decline in forests .Mining ,quarrying, irrigation and agriculture are also responsible for large scale deforestation .
There are many hazards caused by deforestation. Deforestation has intensified soil erosion tenfold .Loss of vegetation causes the loosening of soil which in turn causes soil erosion.
Large scale deforestation causes disastrous floods which in turn causes mass destruction of natural vegetation and loss to life and property. Deforestation destroys the natural habitats of hundreds of animals. As a result of deforestation more and more land is being converted into deserts .Deforestation leads to the deficiency of rainfall as forests cause rains. Ultimately the fertile land is converted to an unyielding piece of barren land.
The importance of forests is well indicated in our Vedic and other scriptures and other old religious literatures. Chandra Gupta Maurya and Chanakya took keen interest in conservation of forests .Chanakya even suggested the creation of National parks in his Artha Shastra .Forest management and conservation processes are essential to maintain the forest in natural state .For successful curbing of deforestation causes for depletion are to be found out. Forests are generally destroyed by fire, improper cutting of trees and killing of animals .Once a forest is destroyed it takes several years to regenerate vegetation.
The basic objectives of forest conservation are:
1. Maintenance of forest eco system in proper shape
2. Conservation of biological diversity.
3. Checking erosion of the soil.
4. Increasing of forest areas.
Conservation measures include both management of existing forests and renovation of forest areas where extensive deforestation has occurred .The following measures should be taken into consideration for scientific for scientific conservation and management of forests:
1. Use of wood for fuel should be discouraged instead biogas and solar energy should be used.
2. As, industrialization is essential for the economic development of a country industries should be encouraged but it should be made compulsory that a new plant should be planted for every tree cut.
3. Another programme namely the agro forestry programme should be implemented it includes planting of trees for forestry, farming and animal husbandry on the same land
4. Afforestation programmes should also be implemented in areas of intense deforestation
Hence we must do all that we can to curb deforestation to ensure a brighter and secure future for mankind .I am sure that we can abolish this evil – deforestation if we can make a joint effort not only globally but also locally in other words glocally.
I believe if all of us cooperate and follow all the measures mentioned above the word deforestation would be non-existent.
So friends let us all do our part in curbing deforestation for,” Save forests, forests will save mankind”.
Deforestation is the conversion of forested areas to non-forest land use such as arable land, pasture, urban use, logged area or wasteland. Generally, the removal or destruction of significant areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity. In many countries, massive deforestation is ongoing and is shaping climate and geography.
It simply means cutting down of forests and not planting equal number of trees around the same place. It denotes causing disequilibrium in the environment.

cutting of forests
the action or process of cutting down trees and forest.
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. The term does not include the removal of industrial forests such as plantations of gums or pines. Deforestation has resulted in the reduction of indigenous forests to four-fifths of their pre-agricultural area. Indigenous forests now cover 21% of the earth's land surface

Currently, 12 million hectares of forests are cleared annually - Almost all of this deforestation occurs in the moist forests and open woodlands of the tropics. At this rate all moist tropical forest could be lost by the year 2050, except for isolated areas in Amazonia, the Zaire basin, as well as a few protected areas within reserves and parks. Some countries such as Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Costa Rica, and Sri Lanka are likely to lose all their tropical forests by the year 2010 if no conservation steps are taken.

Deforestation is brought about by the following:

* conversion of forests and woodlands to agricultural land to feed growing numbers of people;

* development of cash crops and cattle ranching, both of which earn money for tropical countries;

* commercial logging (which supplies the world market with woods such as meranti, teak, mahogany and ebony) destroys trees as well as opening up forests for agriculture;

* felling of trees for firewood and building material; the heavy lopping of foliage for fodder; and heavy browsing of saplings by domestic animals like goats.

To compound the problem, the poor soils of the humid tropics do not support agriculture for long. Thus people are often forced to move on and clear more forests in order to maintain production.

-Consequences:
* Alteration of local and global climates through disruption of:

a) The carbon cycle. Forests act as a major carbon store because carbon dioxide (CO2) is taken up from the atmosphere and used to produce the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that make up the tree. When forests are cleared, and the trees are either burnt or rot, this carbon is released as CO2. This leads to an increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration. CO2 is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is estimated that deforestation contributes one-third of all CO2 releases caused by people.

b) The water cycle. Trees draw ground water up through their roots and release it into the atmosphere (transpiration). In Amazonia over half of all the water circulating through the region's ecosystem remains within the plants. With removal of part of the forest, the region cannot hold as much water. The effect of this could be a drier climate.

* Soil erosion With the loss of a protective cover of vegetation more soil is lost.

* Silting of water courses, lakes and dams This occurs as a result of soil erosion.

* Extinction of species which depend on the forest for survival. Forests contain more than half of all species on our planet - as the habitat of these species is destroyed, so the number of species declines .
The causes of desertification are complex, but deforestation is one of the contributing factors
