Why doesn't the Pacific NW have glass soda bottle deposit programs?

The last I knew, the midwest still did this. The NW is known for being 'green' and recycle friendly. So why then, don't we have the glass bottles? I personally think everything tastes better from glass.
I've heard rumors recently of the possibility of stopping sales of plastic water bottles because too few people recycle and our landfills are getting overrun with them. Charging a deposit fee for a glass bottle encourages people to recycle.

Answer:
I know what you're talking about, and I agree, it's better in glass. But I haven't seen reusable glass deposit bottles in the midwest for at least 12 years.
Beer bottles are still glass, and they use the deposit system for them in most places; but that still doesn't stop them from getting smashed.

The four big issues I can think of immediately with glass are:
cost of manufacture vs plastic,
cost of making sure a reuseable container is clean enough to drink from again while not destroying it in the process (glass threads on bottles),
the extra weight = extra shipping costs, and
the safety issue of broken glass.

Okay, make that two issues: cost and safety.

Good idea though, if those issues are addressed.
Oregon has a deposit law, but I haven't seen many glass soda bottles around anywhere lately. Nothing like the 1 litre bottles we used to get 20c for back in the '80's.
