Going on a road trip, what are some "Eco" destinations to visit?

We are leaving from Michigan, heading west. Plan on going through Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, and back to Michigan through Missouri and Illinois respectively. Might get over into Arizona.

Does anyone have some awesome environmentally related stops we could make? Some examples that I am allready looking at are the Sod House Museum in Gotherburg Nebraska, The Earthship world HQ in Taos New Mexico, More earthships up in Colorado, the Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Missouri, and possibly Arcosanti in Arizona.

Anyone live in any of these states and have some great tips? They are greatly appreciated!

Answer:
Dude, it's not the destination, it's the *journey*. Of course, seeing the Grand Canyon is inspirational and educational, a fantastic experience in geology. And the SW offers chances to see lost Indian cultures and surviving ones. But.

You can make your trip into an adventure in reducing your ecological footprint. You could...
- camp under the stars (no electricity)
- practice all the techniques for higher fuel economy
- find local foods with fewer food-miles in them
- pick up lots of hitchhikers
- carry your drinks in recyclable containers
etc, etc, etc.

Or, think of all the ecological disasters you could visit, like the Four Corners power plant, some nice refineries (be sure and get the tour), maybe some coal and uranium strip mines in NE Wyoming. Be sure and throw in a couple such places to balance things out :-)
all places have interesting ecology
Honestly, a road trip and ecological stops don't really mix because your travels will be emitting a lot of greenhouse gases. I know you want to have a fun vacation and see the country and whatnot, but that's the unfortunate reality of global warming. For example, you mentioned the southwest as one of your destinations. Arizona in particular is in the midst of a long drought (8 years so far, as I recall) and this will only continue as global warming increases, and you're unfortunately contributing to global warming by travelling to that area.
well on the next trip come to Space Coast Brevard County Florida! We are big on eco tourism here!

Cape Canveral National Seashore: no condos ; no nothing but beach! and old Florida hammocks! Indian River Lagoon is so diverse with manatees and many many bird lovers here too! Kitesurfing and kayaking eco tours!
