That age is derived from distance to other stars, the elements, and a few other factors. It is not unreasonable to assume a very old Universe. (By the way, contrary to some beliefs, an old Universe DOES NOT contradict the Bible)
The current model of the Universe is the Big Bang Model which so far has proven fairly predictive with what science discovers. There continues to be, however, the big "WOW" in scientific discoveries; and as far as I can tell, most reliable scientists are still not certain that the current laws of physics were valid at the moment of creation(BIG BANG)
Bottom line, the age of the earth is an interesting topic but it has little relevance to why the earth is here at all and it has no relevance to how each of us should live life.
