Does using the mute button save energy?

I'd like to know if any studies have been done to assess that for both "just the commercials" and for times when the TV is left on for an hour or more.

Answer:
C'mon people, she's asking a legitimate question.

Probably yes, because a loudspeaker requires electrical power. The savings will be negligible, unless you have a huge speaker system that is powered by a powerful amplifier that uses a LOT of power.

I have a Pioneer amp (energy star certified) and its amplifier fans come on and off based on the loudness of the sound. For example if I have a music on, fans would spin down on quieter parts of a song and will be running at full speed on louder parts.

Fans are there to cool down the amps heat radiating components that get hotter with louder sounds.
what the?
no dum dum llol
it stops sound from coming out
wtf?no
no! duh
no
I'd say that most of the energy used by the television involves creating the image, and using the mute button saves little to no energy.
Maybe ever so sleightly, but I'm thinking probably not. The voltage, even though it isn't powering the speaker because mute has been turned on, has to be disappated somewhere - probably just as heat. And if that is the case, then it is basically the same either way.
the only energy the mute button saves is not having to walk to the TV to turn it down.
It does not save energy...Other things to save are..unplug all your chargers cell etc. from the walls. Even if phone is not plugged in it uses energy.
Well, yeah, obviously it would save some energy because your speaker is not being powered.

However it takes a crapload of energy to fire off that CRT or even LCD backlight to make the picture, and a very very very tiny amount of power for the speaker.

After 1000 years it might save 1kw. The speaker in your TV uses very little power. barely anything.
no but it would help if you turned of the T.V.
No, it won't save energy.

I hope you're kidding, because if the Hippies really are dumb enough to come up with such a ****-eyed idea, the country really is screwed.
good question
like to have a mute button for American skeptics they are becoming boring with the forever question is Global warming real

And they dont even want an Answer ,they are only looking for fellow Ostridges

Judging by the quantity it appears that most Americans dont Care about this Planet ,and want to abuse it into oblivion

And they considder Global Warming a fantasy of one of their politicians

Scary to realise that they are gonna be the rulers of this world When they install their New World Order
actually, technically it should because less electricty is used since less energy because no sound needs to be created.
Don't count on it ...
A very small amount is saved if you are talking about the speakers in the TV (not a huge speaker system). If you don't have a LCD /plasma TV then you save more using a LCD TV than a CRT TV, assuming you don't get a much larger TV.

Generally about 1W or less of power is used for the TV speaker.

If you want to measure your energy usage you can get a "Kill A Watt" meter.
If cornswalled was a hippie he would know that it takes electricity to run a speaker inside of your television they don't just magically have sound he must have seen to many Harry Potter movies . They don't take much but nun the less yes it would save energy .I don't think you would see the difference in your light bill and its not a good idea to shut it off just for the commercials because it takes more electricity to restart it then if you left it on for such a short time
there is no such a research as far as I am aware of
Hi jaene,
yes it does save electricity but is negligible to what it takes to keep the CRT(cathode ray Tube ) working.

There is an advantege by using the MUTE button it does save you from Voice Pollution for some time :-)
