Answer:
I think that it's important to combine activism with personal actions life buying recycled or riding your bike.
Activism is getting busy and trying to make change in the world, by organising with others, tackling problems head on, stirring the stew so to speak.
I'm a member of a few activist groups, and I have the following tips:
1. Understand the issues well. Environmentalists have credibility only if they tell the truth, speak intelligently, and demonstrate knowledge of what the are talking about. Alarmist and dramatic statements may get you short term attention, but eventually, people will stop listening to you. Besides, the truth about habitat loss, climate change and other issues are bad enough without exaggeration.
2. Collectively organise. If you want change in the world, you must first get your own mind and group in order. Top-down decision-making structures, violence and greed are the root causes of most environmental problems. Show yourself and the people in your community that another way is possible by using consensus decision-making, non-violence and grassroots organising. It is very important that you establish your values in this way form the outset, because if people join your group, down the track, you don't want these principles unsaid.
3. Set an objective. This is very important. Is your objective small and local: like saving a nearby remnant habitat area from housing development, or is it larger scaled, like adovcacting for dramatic cuts in greenhouse gases. Again, this will help you convince people to join you when you can say "we are trying to achieve this" and it will also help you measure how successful you are. Once you have met you first objective, you can always set a new one.
4. Be visible. Have a website, a yahoogroups list, and a newsletter. Put up posters and flyers in libraries, community buildings, universities etc. Look around at what's happening and send out comments to the media about local environment issues. Keep it within your values and aimed towards your objective. The more the group is known, the more people will want to join you, particularly if you have clear objectives, are non-violent, and know what you are talking about.
Good luck!
Keep on trying to see what needs improvement and how to do it as well as you can and learn or figure out how solve all the problems better and better as you go and things will get better and better from there..
