Is the bee shortage a short term problem, or is it a disaster in the making?

Answer:
UK, in awful weather, we have loads of bees, butterflies, dragon flies, moor hens rabbits etc. The first of these photos were taken when it was flooding. (The start of the smaller photos show our neighbours' flooding).

How? Permaculture design, managing water, planting trees and letting nature heal herself. Interested? Look at campaign to get a new sub category for Permaculture in Green Living section.
there are multiple reasons for the shortage so we have to have multiple solutions
Global warming: that' why we need Al Gore as President. He can restore peace, harmony, and balance to the universe.

Hell, look what he did for the internet.
That question is yet under consideration. It _is_ a problem, though, since bees are one of the most prolific pollinators on our planet.
If the bees disappear, the crops disappear next.

Vocal Democrat...I like you...you funny!
That depends on whether the bee population recovers, either on its own or with human help to find and address teh cause.

If tehe population recovers, its really jsut a short-term problem. But about 30% of US agricultural production--and comparable amounts worldwide--depends on bee pollination of crops. And to lose that could be a major disaster.
From what I have seen the most worrisome problem is that they have no clue what is causing it. Theories from climate change to harsh winter, to pesticide use, to mite-borne viruses, to cellphone EMF have been suggested. Heck, maybe the killer bees have finally arrived with tiny sniper rifles.

The point is, until the cause of the problem is determined, there is no way of knowing. This is a good link to read in the meantime.
At this point, I think its almost impossible to say one way or the other. They have to find out what's actually causing the bee disappearances before we can devise a solution. It may be something simple, or it could be extremely complicated.

If the cause remains elusive, or is a wider-scale problem than people may have feared, it could indeed become a disaster. A majority of crops depend on the honey bee for pollination. Not to mention the amount of honey that is put into foods we eat on a daily basis. It would be a little less alarming if the hives that become abandoned showed signs of stress prior. When a colony that is perfectly fine the night before is half missing the next day, its cause for concern.
The Bee shortage is a long term problem, and is disaster in the making. The Bible says if we disobey God's laws that we will have curses brought upon our land. And if we obey His laws , repent and change he will take those curses away and bless us.
Our nation founded on godly laws from its begginng. I find that using chemicals to keep weeds down affects these bees. New RoundUp Ready Beans and Corn are causing the insects to weaken and this allows the mites to destroy them.
Will we wait till its too late to change? Can we do our part to help prevent the loss of bees? Stop using chemicals. There is a company that promotes natural ways to get rid of insects that are eating cabbage and tomatoes and helps rid the Japanese Beetles too. Just google www.shaklee.com and check out that company. Basic H is the main one that I use to rid insects from my garden but won't hurt the bees. Anhydrous kills people who breathe it and for sure it kills the earthworms in the soil too. I was always told that if I wasn't part of the solution I would be part of the problem.

Everything's a short-term problem from any reasonable perspective. Bees have been around a lot longer than humans. They aren't likely to go anywhere over the long haul.
Perhaps man has interfered with the balance of nature when he introduced Genetically Modified (GM) crops.
We had a bee box for a while. The honey is magnificent when it is grow your own. But the mean nasty bee keepers association insisted that legislation be passed that everyone who has a bee hive must have a permit to have one.. and we had to give them up. Pity really.

The purpose of the permit is to make certain that there are no diseases that will interfere with commercial honey production. I sort of appreciate that concept. I can either pay a commercial licence for my bee hives or buy my honey from a commercial producer but I certainly cannot under any circumstances get my honey for free by keeping bee boxes.

Pity, I have 4 huge gum trees at my place that flower every year without fail and bees come in the millions to use the pollen. Some native bees made a nest in the house next door because of the trees (and perhpas because of my garden). I doubt they have a license to keep those bees... and I suppose, like all wild bees nests in domestic situations, the nest will be exterminated by chemical controls. The city is hugely expansive. You wuold think that some bees could have a home here wouldn't you?

If you really want to know why there is a bee shortage. the answer is in that story somewhere.

I think it is an environmental disaster by reason of the false economy of imposed commercial preservation orders. I would be willing to share my free honey with my neighbours and that is bad for industry. Large environmental disasters are difficult to resolve.. so we should really be looking at all the smaller ones... cause we can sort them out really easily can't we?

Oh BTW I love that movie. "Being There". one of my favourites.
i hope it is a temporary problem that will heal itself. i cannot imagine a world without honey. or bees. a big fat bumble bee is a beautiful sight to behold.
