Did You Know That New Scientific Research Refutes Many Of Gore's Climate Claims?
June 30, 2007
BY JAMES M. TAYLOR
In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.
If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming.
A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.
Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.
For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."
Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."
Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.
Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.
Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."
Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.
Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.
Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

Answer:
DO you mean the same AL Gore who invented the Internet??
GLobal warming and cooling has been going on for eons. If he is so worried about it he could set an example by using less energy in his mansion.
I knew that. I am not stupid.
The person below has their facts wrong. 98% of all glaciers and ice sheets are increasing. This is no small amount. This is based on science and contradicts Mr Gore. I guess this is one of the inconvenient facts he wants to hide. How about the fact that Mars has seen a significant (several degrees) increase in its temperature. I guess we better teach the Martians how to carpool. How do the fanatical environmentalist explain the fact that the temperature in Southern California is at least 2-3 degrees cooler on average than in the 1960's? Most noted scientists are now predicting Earths' cooling starting in 2010. I guess since these facts do not support your junk science it is ok that they be ignored!!
Most of these examples look at one place and say "It's not happening here." For example., glaciers are growing a few places, but mostly, they're retreating fast. The fact that they are growing in a few places disproves nothing.
The author is from the "Heartland Institute", a place whose mission is to spread doubt about global warming, not give a balanced view. They receive funding from ExxonMobil. Here's one of their other projects:
"in 2006 the Heartland Institute partnered with the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) in "a campaign to change public opinion about tobacco"
You cite the IPCC report of 2007. If that's a good source, global warming is real and mostly man made. It is, and it is.
i guess they are growing if you consider gaining air content as growing.
One single event cant prove the reality of climate change We just had the worst floods ever in Sheffield England after the wettest June on record which was preceded by the hottest April on record this year. In Greece and Italy people have been dying of heat exhaustion as temperatures have reached 49 degrees celcius. I noticed that Texas recently had a foot of rain and flooding -that may be normal but I doubt it. But one thing which proves the climate is changing at least in England is that flowers are flowering two weeks early than previously at least. I saw a butterfly on the last day of January outdoors that is not normal. There were numerous sitings of Herons from southermost Europe which is also not normal . Now one end of the Sheffield Wednesday football stadium is under 20 feet of water and the weather forcast for tomorrow is torrential rain again not normal. You know climate change is real when you fear tomorrow's weather
It would be nice if all who read this and are open-minded would verify the facts you have presented, and then all write Mr. Gore individual letters and cite the references and data and ask if he will publicly recant. And if not, why not?
And copy your letters to your local newspaper "Letters to the Editor"; whether they will be published or not depends on the political orientation of the paper.
Also, send copies to all your local public school boards, and ask if this slanted and incorrect propaganda film has been or is going to be shown to students, and if so, demand that the other side be presented with equal time, as being an issue of public controversy and important so students will have actual facts to judge from.
If they reject, another letter to the editors of all the local papers. And maybe an appearance at your local school board meeting, data and references in hand, and demand that education be unbiased.
How important is it to YOU that the young people of today have all the data in an unbiased manner and are trained to find the truth, not the most politically correct answer?
I think you will be astounded at the ferocity with which you will be rejected in most places!! Goring Gore is a secular heresy!! Look out for the headsman!
The truth has to get out; so many are being influenced the other way, to submit quietly to whatever the world leadership wants. And it takes work, and the guts to stand up under fire to counteract this type of man-made malaise.
Few people read FunQA.com; and those who disagree with Mr. Gore are going to have to be brave and confront his propaganda wherever and whenever it appears.
I recall many years ago when no less a distinguished journal of science than Scientific American Magazine decided that a person's personal religion made him a better or poorer scientist, And so they made a policy to summarily reject papers and articles if it was shown that the individual had any contamination with the specified religious ties. Regardless of the subject and content of the article or the validity of the science used.
This type of censorship continues, and now includes political correctness often, it appears, also. But it is really due to the issue of economics; and outside pressures. Scientific American caved to political correctness and religious discrimination, and I canceled my subscription in protest.
Got a letter justifying their action and suggesting I was not quite rational to be bothered by religious discrimination in science.
So this is not new, just exceptionally flagrant with Mr. Gore, and with anybody who disagrees with him, and you see in this set of answers the smear tactics being applied, very brazenly.
Smear is not an answer or a good refutation.
But...I'm sooo disappointed; I had visions of my new Greenland farm on fertile volcanic soil at retirement!! Figured in 5 years at the inferred rate of ice melting I ought to be able to move right in and start planting. A 21st century Viking!!
this is like everything else doesn't matter the subject. Just because everyone doesn't agree doesn't mean it is not happening. surely there can be no one left who thinks it is a good idea to pump tons of crap into our air and water and thinks it will not cause problems at some point.
He has also made claims that there is a direct correlation between co2 levels and temperatures, and fails to say that co2 lags temperatures not the other way round.
He also makes the claim that current temperatures are the highest in the last 1000 years. Soon and Baliunas (2003) did a study of over 100 temperature reconstruction studies from all over the world and concluded:
"Climate proxy research provides an aggregate, broad
perspective on questions regarding the reality of Little
Ice Age, Medieval Warm Period and the 20th century
surface thermometer global warming. The picture
emerges from many localities that both the Little Ice
Age and Medieval Warm epoch are widespread and
near-synchronous phenomena, as conceived by Bryson
et al. (1963), Lamb (1965) and numerous researchers
since. Overall, the 20th century does not contain the
warmest anomaly of the past millennium in most of the
proxy records, which have been sampled world-wide.
Past researchers implied that unusual 20th century
warming means a global human impact. However, the
proxies show that the 20th century is not unusually
warm or extreme."
That's the funny thing about research, scientific or otherwise. Depending on the source, you can have research that backs up any claim that one cares to make. I'm sure Gore has the "scientific research" to back up his clams too, just like the anti-Gores do. So how do we know who is accurate? I believe the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
peta and environmentalists are idiots. they are thugs. they waste societies time, energy and money on stupid things when we should be fighting disease, poverty, human sex and labour trafficking, looking for peace. worldwide instability and inequality are way more important than how some chickens and cows are treated or if some ice melts. temperature has gone up and down all the time.
The Earth is heating up. There's *NO* questioning that. None.
Now whether or not man is creating this is where I start to doubt what's being said.
Without making this too long and drawn out, the Earth's axis spins and has a wobble just like a spinning top. It completes a rotation every 40,000 years. It's no coincidence that we go into an ice age roughly every 40,000 years.

There's more such as Earth's orbit around the Sun is not a perfect sphere. It constantly changes. Sometimes we orbit closer to the Sun and sometimes we're farther out.
I could go into greater detail, but as you guys already know, when you start cluttering your answers nobody reads the damn things. :)
the real issue is "who thinks this and why"
if you know ANYTHING about science, you know you can find a few scientists to back up about ANYTHING you want to say...
BUT... what do most scientists believe and why?
from what I can tell, and who I've talked too... you're pointing out the disenters... and they are in the vast minority...
TO SAY THAT THESE GUYS ARE RIGHT... is just as rediculous as saying Al Gore is right for sure... it's still a theory, but conditions change...
is there a conservative out there that understands science in the least and can do more than copy and paste?
Don't hold your breath waiting, you'll pass out. Gore had an agenda, and has no cause to back down, even if there is proof that he should. There are still enough gullible people that will believe him to keep his book, and agenda a live and well for a while longer yet. The "Chicken Little's" of the world love swill such as Gore has produced. They'll keep feeding on it until it is stale enough, or they find a new source that is even more tasty than his.
Why yes I do and there's so much more
