Recycle paper ?

What happens when all recycled paper becomes toilet paper ?

Answer:
Spot. When recycled paper becomes toilet paper it gets used and flushed away.

Not all recycled paper becomes toilet paper. There are about as many uses for recycled paper as there are for non-recycled.

Zaynpevy - I've heard that argument re: recyling paper - but I'm afraid it's flawed.

It takes less energy to produce paper from recycled materials than it does to make paper from virgin wood.

Fossil fuel burning from transportation: Recyclable paper is usually collected in the same urban area that it is recycled in - as opposed to transporting greater distances from the rural areas that the trees are logged in.

Bleaching and dyeing are processes that apply to both recycled paper and paper from virgin wood.

Recycling paper instead of binning it also reduces the demand on space for landfill.

If you add to that the economic benefits of recycling (over binning), it makes a lot of sense to recycle.

It is true that paper does have a positive calorific value, and burning it with the rest of household waste can be used to generate electricity, but the savings here are outweighed by the more damaging effects elsewhere.

BTW - here's a few articles you might find interesting - in particular the one from "Friends of the Earth - (foe.co.uk)" :

First, all recyled paper doesnt and will never become toilet tissue. Secondly all toilet tissue is wasted and never makes it back to the fibre recycling world.

Flush and think.
Actually, it is worse on the environment to recycle paper. We now have more trees in the US than we did 100 years ago, plus the fossil fuels used to transport all of the paper to the recycling plant is outrageous. Not to mention the fumes that are shot into the sky and the ozone from the processes the paper has to go through to be recycled. It just makes more sense NOT to recycle paper. But if you want to, try finding a site that tells you how to recycle it yourself. There are MANY ways to use all your old paper again. And for the most part, all you need is a blender and some water. It's also a great way to teach kids about conservation and recycling.
When you recycle paper, it does not always become toilet paper. Recycled paper can become newspaper, printer paper, books, magazines, paper towels, AND toilet paper. Most of these products also contain "virgin" paper, or nonrecycled paper.
