Do you actually recycle batteries or just throw them in the garbage?

Answer:
well i use to throw them away until i found a few store that take them for recycling. Walgreens and hardware stores are the ones I know that take them so remember to recycle
I am ashamed to say I throw them away. Honestly, I didn't even know you could recycle batteries.
Recycle. We have a reasonably good hazmat disposal program in my town.
Well, to be perfectly honest.... it depends on which is most convenient and where I am at the time one "dies".
I have been using rechargeable AA batteries which are good for 1000 charges. These are good for "high drain situations" like a camera. Also, to get best results, you should clean the batteries and contacts with a clean pencil eraser. This helps keep the contacts clean so battery will seem to be dead while only the contacts are not good.
I use rechargeable ones whenever i can, the others i throw at the "battery collection" box at work. i have no idea what THEY do with them.
If you're in NZ - I store my dead batteries in a container until our Haz mobile service comes to our area and I have enough to drop off at their collection point. It's free and includes pick up of any hazardous waste including chemicals, oils, bulbs, batteries, mobile phones... www.hazmobile.govt.nz.
I use a post paid envelope from Sainsburys - you can pick them up by the checkouts (with the leaflets for insurance & credit cards) - you just put the batteries in, seal the bag and put it in a post box. It is free and no hassle!
IKEA has a column of recycling bins near the returns desk. So I save all my batteries up in a box in the kitchen, and when I know I'm going to IKEA I just transfer them all to a plastic bag and empty it when I get there. They even have an area for plastic bags, so it's easy. My IKEA now has a cool program:

They charge 5 cents to use their "throwaway" bags. Or, you can pay 59 cents to buy a large blue nylon bag that looks like their store shopping bag, and then use that when you shop next. They give you a 58 cent coupon to use next time -- I love this gracious and aggressive nod to environmentalists in their store policy. Some complain, but they're the ones stomping thier cigarette butts out on the pavement as they walk in.

Some people don't get it. Some can be taught, some can't. Little by little, we get there... :)
i throw them in the garbage.
I recycle them, or I will when I figure out where to take them. Anyone have any suggestions?
I used to throw them away, but now I recycle them.
