What measures should be taken by NASCAR towards reversing the effects of global warming?
Answer:
Nascar is stupid. They should put sterilization rays in the turnstiles at Nascar events. However, I highly doubt that Nascar has an appreciable effect on global warming. The umpteen-million philistines who show on race day probably do. Global warming is caused by a billion cars on the road, most of which are driven a mile or two in order to get a bag of dollar menu and a 30 pack of Milwaukee's Best, coal-fired generating stations, and you and I. If you want someone to blame, blame me, yourself, and everyone else in the world who can't be weaned from the crude oil teat. WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF EVERYTHING. All we can do is lessen our own impact, and be good examples for our neighbors. To answer your question about why Nascar has done nothing to curtail the effects of their sport, it's because they don't want to lose money. Why does anyone think that any big business would want to do anything that might cut into their profit margins? Does anyone think that the rich really care about anything except staying rich? As long as there is money to be made at the expense of our environment, it will be made. Hate to sound so pessimistic. Don't expect anything to change until the last oil well runs dry.
To be blunt, NASCAR is a waste of time and resources. A bunch of rednecks driving around in circles burning gas like there's no tomorrow for the enjoyment of other rednecks. What a waste. We should just get rid of it, or at least make them race in electric cars. They could all use Tesla Roadsters!
Limit the amount of fuel each contestant can use during a race.
Nascar could start using vehicles that operate using biofuels or Compact natural gas. they could also attempt racing hybrid vehicles to see a difference in fuel consumption while idling and racing. there are many things nascar can do to evoke positive environmental change and get the message out. there are many things that can be done that would enhance the performance of the car while helping the environment and air around the racetracks. NASCAR should really be a leader at the forefront of technology and innovation, showing the american public the benefits of the new technology.
nascar, which i hate by the way, could quit racing completely and it wouldnt make a small fraction of a percent of a difference in global warming. there arent enough of them for it to make that big of an impact when you concider the 1000s and millions of autos and care on the road, much less the chemical plants and refineries.
As much fuel as NASCAR racers burn, it is nowhere near the total amount of fuel used by the spectators. So using your logic, wouldn't it make sense to ban all sporting events? Why stop there, let's ban concerts, movies, theater, shopping malls, political conventions, vacation travel...
Where will you stop?
The racetrack is responsible for the development of:
Pneumatic shocks and tires.
Independent suspension.
Passenger restraint technology.
Advanced carburation and fuel injection.
Electronic ignition.
Fuel management.
Aerodynamic design technology.
Lubrication technology.
Radial tire technology.
Transverse engine mounting.
Alternative fuel technology.
...and the list goes on...
All of these things have contributed to the efficiency, safety and reliability of automobiles in general.
More fuel is consumed by the spectators driving to the events than the participants use during the events.
The fuel used by race cars is a tiny fraction of the fuel used by the rest of society, but society's benefit from racetrack technology is tremendous.
They could run the engines backwards, suck in co2 and pump out fresh air. The winner would be the driver who looks most refreshed at the end of the race.
3DM has it exactly right. The gas burned by the racers is so small as to be meaningless. 90+% of the impact on global warming comes from spectators driving to the race.
So, the only answer is to ban all spectator events, baseball, rock concerts, etc?
No. We don't have to stop doing the things we like to do. We just have to do them more efficiently.
nascar does waste some resources, but it is a small percentage when compared to the commuting masses,
all racing is intended to push technological innovation.
just think of all the gas savings that people have built in to current cars that is a direct result of innovations obtained due to racing in the 70's and 80s
without racing, modern cars would be no where near as fuel efficient and safe as they are.
yes they waste some gas and tires, but the technology that is obtained from it saves everyone so much more in the long run.
they are helping, your just not looking at how.
Football causes more greenhouse gas than all motor racing in the world
American football is a pathetic game, designed by and for the sponsors
Homer Simpson was right football without beer in boring
(only Americans could watch a race that only has left hand corners)
